    The light from the fire (lantern, bonfire etc) reflected off (shined on) his (tired? ragged?) old face, making it look extraordinarily solemn (stern).

    Dependant on context and personal style. I personally prefer assigning certain terms to one translation so that I have a more stable way of choosing which word to use and not just go "I wonder what words I shall use today :hmm:"
