If people hate a character it means they're emotionally invested at least somewhat in the story or character and the author that wrote the character can also be recognized as (hopefully) doing it for a reason. I usually don't dislike an author for writing a character that I dislike or loathe, but I do dislike authors that go out of their way to have their jerk characters get everything going their way even when by all rights in the story they shouldn't. Diabolus ex machina, "I was only pretending to lose", a power that shouldn't exist in the story just popping up to let the villain get away, etc.
You mean stories where MC(who is less than half as smart as what he thinks he is), recruits retarded allies and retarded allies went ahead to trigger traps, drama, aggro enemies and willingly feed power-up elixirs to cannon-fodder enemies to keep them as constant nuisances (all for the sake of drama and word spam)? And MC doesn't bother to kill the enemy but leaves them to fester and grow stronger? And if MC does ever attempt to kill the above mentioned enemy, enemy will manage to run away and join the Main Dr-Evil lol organization.
Exactly those MCs! Don't you just love the immortal cockroach enemy that still somehow thinks they're better than the MC despite getting their ass kicked an endless number of times? But yeah, that is true. MC ineptitude and incompetence is a different bag of worms, but one that can just as frequently tank the fun of a story. In one of the other novels I'm reading, there was recently a character introduced that is super obnoxious and annoying but almost immediately recruited as an apprentice because of their potential. I am pretty sure this character exists just to act as a lodestone for the author to pull the MC down since they can't use the MC's faction to do it anymore because the MC went to a different world and the faction and family are safely in the old world
If the MC were as smart as real people, most of the CN novels would be over in 500 chapters. A stupid plot needs a stupid MC. Doesn't fail to leave a bad aftertaste in the mouth though. Worst cases are where MC turn more stupid at the end of the novel Spoiler Looking at you Martial World
