Discussion A strange trend in ratings.

I am recently seeing a lot of new novels on NU get a 3 star as their first rating. Am I the only one to hv noticed this phenomenon?

It almost feels like someone is haunting the NU releases page with the sole intention of handing out 3 stars to any new titles, irrespective of genre/country of publication/TL site!

Or is it just me being paranoid/overthinking things?

I'd like to hear the opinions of fellow NUFfians.

I tend to avoid reviews. Im pretty susceptible to opinions.

 

is just to stop novels getting 0 stars while no one rate it, or reach 5 stars and 1 star with only one review

I’ve noticed an increase in yaoi novels recently being translated. I got nothing against them but I am quite curious about the audience that they appeal to.

 

1. 3 means normal/average/ to be on watch list (planning for reading)
2. 4 means good to be read/not dissapointing, well maybe one or two
3. 5, a new world

 

It might be some people who try reading novels with tags they dislike then giving said novels low rating, like this person mentioned.

2 stars its basicly a clone of another without adding anything
3 stars is the standart for a average good to read novel
4 stars for a novel that adds good a spin on the genre, has good world building
5 stars for the love of your life

but in my opinion review below 1/3 are useless anyways only capable to view a trend

 

I dont read reviews. Most of them arent even true.

 

3 isn’t a low rating, it’s average. Personally i find most of the newer novels on here perfectly fitting for such a rating.

 

I mean, saying that 3* is an average rating is fine, but people don't actually spend time to give balanced ratings to everything they read. I, for one, don't read anything that don't interest me so anything I rate would be 4* (things I like) or 5* (things I really like) with 3* and below on very rare occasion when I read something really far but ended up getting disappointed.

I don’t think it’s fair to give something with originally 0 rating a 3* rating just to set it as ‘average’. After all, the average works get higher rating than that.

 

3 is the ideal reading to give to a new novel because it can go up or down from there

Umm... I was talking about ratings, not reviews. But I somewhat agree as reviews tend to be subjective and often over-exaggerate those aspects of the novel which the reviewer may feel strongly about.

I usually hesitate to read novels with avg. rating below 3.8 stars unless they hv only a few ratings. I mean, wouldn't u suspect something being amiss if a novel with, say, 100 ratings cannot even avge 3.5 stars?

Theoretically, yes. I just evaluate based on the TLed chs. I may change it up/down, depending on my impression of future chs.

well i cinda agree with you a novel thats only average doesnt stay long
but a novel with only a few chapters AKA new Novel you basicly dont need to look at the rating
it doesnt have enoth content to get rated by in my opinion

even a novel with a good start can get average
a good build world can get easyly switched to a bland run of the mill galaxy system

Personally I read at 3.9 and above on this site, if it's on RRL I give it a try at 3.5 if the tags match what I like.
These are my search settings when I'm just looking, I do give some of the tags I disabled a try if it gets recommended by someone and the rating is good enough.

I generally don't read novels I consider "average", average is what I'd read if I wanted to just waste some time. I generally only read novels I'd give a 4 star rating or more after 50 chapters, 20 on RRL.
3 stars is average from the one rating its' perspective, if a novel can't make it past that with 100 ratings then it would mean that there generally isn't that many people who would consider it good.
