The government of Japan has entered into a state of constitutional monarchy, which is exactly like Britain’s government.
The previous emperoer’s era did everything possible to relinquish the power of the imperial household and let it flow into the hands of the people and Prime Minister. So as of now, the Imperial Family holds no power in japan. They serve as symbolic figureheads and have ceremonial duties in japan. The family still receives a stipend of the taxes the Japanese citizens pay, because it is still “their” land. Like how in Britain, everyone is known as the “Queen’s Subjects” and not citizens.
And the current government will stay pro people as of now. The Imperial Family is perfectly satisfied with having no power and it is their wish to let the people govern themselves.
Though the future is full of possibilities. Maybe one descendant of the imperial household will have desires to reclaim power and enter the government and work his way up to a position of power and slowly transfer over authority to the Imperial Family.

And as a side note, the Imperial family is much loved and respected by every Japanese citizen. The Japanese love them and most have memorized their faces.
I once read an article how a Princess was going out incognito to do some volunteer work, and she didn’t make much of an attempt to hide her face, and some people instantly recognized her. The imperial family is apparently quite famous. We just don’t hear much of them outside of japan since the Imperial Family is rather low key.

Though it’s a bit sad that Japan’s overall low birth rate is affecting them as well. There aren’t many imperial babies being born. The youngest prince is absolutely adorable!
Though the current Empress has been through a lot, so it’s understandable she hasn’t had much time for children.

I know of the show but I never got into it tbh. I Know if I watched it, I would probably like it but too much time spent on Japanese media as it is between anime, manga, novels and games.

It doesn't really matter, only that the generation who live in this time period is called something else. The emperors themselves are of little interest to the average Japanese.

They can rally popular support for things. They're better respected than most other existing monarchs.

Problem with that is they're not supposed to show themselves other than during official functions and they are put on a pedestal where they cannot be touched, talked to or met without Diet approval. Basically they're no different from that $200,000 porcelain you keep displayed in a glass case. It's true that they're better respected, but many Japanese people don't really care enough to listen to the emperor even if he say something.
