Question Is there a Taiwanese equivalent of Qidian?

Is there? I have been hanging around NU for a while and I have noticed that none of the Chinese web novels are written by Taiwanese authors. They are all from mainland China.

And because the last sci-fic web novel I read was ruined by a totally unnecessary anti-Taiwan sub-plot, I suddenly thought that maybe it would be less painful to read stuff written by Taiwanese web novelists.

But well, i don’t really know a real answer to your question, but maybe you could try looking under other publishers than Qidian. They arent the only chinese one.

Taiwan and China have the same spoken language and similar culture however they're split because of their political ideals

 

The main character of The Ultimate Evolution on QiDian is Taiwanese. Unique Legends is the other main Taiwanese book I've read. Usually Taiwanese books are just in the bookstores, I don't think there's a huge web-novel translation community in Taiwan especially since a lot of them speak and write mandarin. You'd be hard pressed to tell the difference between a Taiwanese and a Chinese novel besides specific anti-Taiwanese sentiment.

Tbh, most of the novels i know that are from taiwan are romance novel (言情小说) that are about a few hundred pages long.
Got addicted to them back then when i had finished most of the wuxia novels in the library due to having no access to internet (or my own phone for that matter) and having nothing to read.

 

That's pretty much the problem. There's nothing stopping a Taiwanese writer from hosting his book on Qidian or one of the other Chinese webnovel sites. And in doing so, he would have access to Mainland China and all other overseas Chinese populations. If your book is hosted on a Taiwanese site, you're probably going to miss out on Mainland China and there's not a whole lot of reason to do so unless you're trying to circumvent Chinese censorship. But even in that case, there's no reason for any reasonably large company to try to do set up such a website, so it's altogether an unlikely proposition.

Not near as big as Qidian or the other major webnovel sites, but yes, Taiwan does have its own webnovel sites. Webnovels are just starting to kind of get going there; print is still king. Often print novels are serialized on these sites after already going to print, and many that begin as webnovels become light novels afterward. Major Taiwan sites that I know are:

But Taiwanese writers use traditional Chinese characters and traditional characters are in use among the Chinese in Hong Kong, Malaysia and Macau etc. During the 90s, due to the influence of Hong Kong comics and manga translated in Taiwan, traditional Chinese is more popular among Chinese otaku.

If we look at things from the language angle, then Taiwanese web novelists (if there are any) ought to be more popular?

Because if we look at countries that officially use simplified Chinese characters, there are only 2 of them. China and Singapore.

Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macau, Malaysia and other Chinese communities around the world use traditional Chinese characters.

Malaysia uses simplified, officially. Unofficially, if you don't know how to read traditional Chinese as well, good luck trying to read anything from 10+ years ago. Same situation in Singapore. In non-Asian countries, it's a 50/50 depending on who wrote it and which is the majority - PRC or Taiwanese.

 

It's not hard for people who read traditional Chinese to learn simplified Chinese, but it's much harder to do it the other way around. Chinese readers who don't want to be cut out from most Chinese media out there are going to make that effort. The opposite also happens, but to a much lesser degree because just about everything that's popular is already available in simplified Chinese.

There's a Taiwanese author I wanted to translate had his books sold by Qidian. Forgot the title, but was drawn by zenith Lee. I think bust artist Q. Azieru also drew the author's other work, can look them up if you are interested.

There are definitely Taiwanese forums with literature section. Can try komica or 2cat 4chan-ishboards and ask for directions from there.
