Actually China is starting to basically buy the US little by little due to several factors but between them it's mainly about consumption/production and other economic factors. Don't rember where or how long I read this but China started buying US debt several years ago and now is starting to buy US companies with old US debt
Odds of that happening is very unlikely or odds of any large scale conflict happening btw nuclear powers basically went out of the door with the advent of nukes.... The loser will simply #yolo when it comes to it so everyone loses in the end... Unless nukes are taken off the table (by that i mean either side has a 100% foolproof way to ensure that the other is unable to use them and not by treaties or agreements as such which are useless when one side is losing) ain't gonna happen... Also UN ain't doing jack shit to prevent ww3 imo... Its more of self control by the major powers plus the lack of actual motivation (I. E. Profit) to start an all out war with each other. War by proxy, however is a different story... Which is more or less on going now anyway...
most likely start (and end) with digital attacks rather than physical ones. most modern countries are so reliant on digital operating systems that attacking that would shut down most necessary and basic infrastructure and create mass chaos and confusion resulting in fear, rioting and looting, among other things. China is behind it's "Great Firewall" but i doubt they'd be any safer than the US so in the end you'd have both countries falling apart without a single shot fired and some other country would take advantage of that and flatten everyone. that, or China will buy out everyone and the entire world will eventually become a part of their Empire....
If USSR was around then US loses but with current geopolitics without the deterrence of their Nuclear Arsenal and Russia's they would lose as China's is isolated by countries that don't like it coz of their current actions.
