That sounds pretty logical. In line with what I've heard before, thanks for the explanation! Two things I'm not clear about:

1. Why would the dollar value crash in that case? Like, what's the mechanic behind it? Is the US obliged to pay back in dollars, which would mean they have to either pull money out of circulation (probably too hard for large amounts) or print new money (devalue currency) and are thus forced to make amends? Or can they repay in other ways, like with Chinese bonds, and do they just take the easy route and repay China in natura?
   
2. The US can't repay with privately owned stuff, right? Idem ditto for patents? Isn't it mostly about indirectly influencing then, and allowing more Chinese influence in the economy of the US?

I'm interested in the finer details.

And yeah, WW2 started in Europe just like WW1. Haven't seen anyone say it started in the US yet
