Dominion's End has this set in an end of the world type setting
or you could go with the classic tearjerker Grave of the Fireflies
hmm...not a trope that pops up a whole lot in the stories i read; for some reason they're almost always orphans, only children or grown adults who aren't close to their family.

It's slow pace, in the sense there is not a lot of action. But every chapter you discover a bit more about the heroin life. Or I should say lives as she is trapped in a time loop.

 

Coiling Dragon and Lord Xue Ying both have early parts (first 100-chapters) about protecting the MC's little brother.
