Well aren't most xianxia romances that way? I don't think I have ever read good romantic xianxia before. Decent, maybe, but definitely not good. Honestly MWs romance is better than most, for all that I dislike harems.
Not sure as i didn't get read far, but should Transcending the Nine Heavens be better in term of romance ? It's harem though. MW is also harem.
Maybe your right and ttnh does have a better romance. IDK thou, didn't really get all the way through, the execution of the story was just to overexaggerated for me to really enjoy it. That said, I do know that MW is a harem, I might not have worded my previous post too well. But at least chicks aren't throwing themselves at him after getting raped, much like a different xianxia I could name...
