In English, she’s the girl in pink who says “This guy are sick.”

LMAO, so true, this is a classic FFVII quote.

I prefer Valkyrie Profile 2 english version. the dialogues rather flow smoothly in english version. Maybe that's just me.

This just disproves the belief myth that subs are better than dubs. And just how difficult it will be for machine translations to replace human translations

Oh, I'm curious, will watch it later~

Guess that's just another reason to improve my Japanese and play the game in the original language though~

That was the longest advertisement for a video I have ever seen.

He doesn’t say ANYTHING in that article.

How did you even arrive at that conclusion?

First off, there are both official and fan subs and dubs. I can only assume you’re saying official dubs vs fan subs, because that’s just the general argument for accuracy. Plus it makes no sense to say official dubs are more or less accurate than official subs. So with that in mind...

Did you see the controversy surrounding the translation of Persona 5? Have you read anything on Webnovel or TapRead? It doesn’t matter whether you’re the official translator or a fan. Both are at best equally likely to fuck up.

Oh, I agree with that, I was pretty surprised when I finished reading the article. I mean... Whenever possible I prefer to just read the thingy instead of watching the video, but that doesn't seem possible this time... >.>

I still have a tab with the video open though, just haven't played it yet...

The video is about a fan of Final Fantasy game, who played the game when it came out with subs. Studied Japanese and 20 years later discovered that the most pivotal scene was lot in translation.
A Japanese friend who killed herself repeated a similar heartbreaking scene that was also lost in translation in the game even though she never played the game.

Y'know.. If this article (of which I still haven't watched the video) is about FFVII's initial release, that was an official localization - it came soon after the original JP release. Fan translators didn't turn their attention to it until many years later, and that only because the official localization was so incredibly poor. So in this case, uh.. fan subs > official dubs.

Tbh, FFVII's localization is a rare stain on Square's treatment of FF titles, though. FF gets a loooooot of TL&C.

Insightful video. He does a good rendition on translating nuance.

    Nuance 1.jpg Nuance 2.jpg Untitled.jpg

And this here proves the nuance of the original language to the target language. And why MTL always tends to lose this nuance.

The 1st image pretty much shows how you can translate that one Japanese phrase into 9 different phrases in English, to fit the context of the story.

The 2nd & 3rd image is just how 23 Japanese characters turns into 29 word paragraph.

Lastly that 3rd image also shows how transliteration sometimes isn't the best answer.
