It's amazing how during the past few seasons there has been an emergence of these clips anime that have now become popular. At first, an anime series would last the 24 episodes unless you had the powerhouses like bleach and one-piece.
Now you're lucky to find one which has 12 episodes. The ones which follow popular manga have become even worse since they tend to ignore some of the best scenes which stick to a readers mind.
Recently it seems like the episode length is now under threat with some running at 5min to 12min in length.
    Have anime lost their originality?
    Plots have been used up?
    What else is next?
When you have an anime where the OP and En songs together, lasts longer than the show itself, you know you have reached the twilight zone. :(

As a One Piece fan, please. You know not the true meaning of suffering.

    5-8 minute intro/recap
Constant multi-episode flashbacks in the middle of a fight
Fights themselves drawn out for multiple episodes.
Every character gets a multi-episode backstory at some point.
    Etc.

The reason is that there is simply too many anime coming out to keep u with source material. In the old days, Anime production was much more costly and time consuming than it is today so companies would only choose a few well known manga to do a show about. But now with the increased sophistication of computer aided animations, companies can crank out anime on the cheap which leads to many trite cashgrab anime.

There was a considerable dry season but it seems to be picking up. Hopefully it won't change. Still better for a five minute anime than 15 minutes of filler content.

Well I think it's ok so long as there is at least 1 anime you want to watch each season....Even though I wish there were more

As there are a lot of new studios emerging now, those smaller ones need to minimalize the risk they take by limiting the anime into 1 cour (3 months coincides with a season) in case the anime is not popular. then they might make more if fans reaction is good. those that run for a lot of episode from the start are ones that popularity is pretty much guaranteed like ones based on shonen jump comics.

the ones with short even 5 min duration are pretty much like the 4-koma version of anime. it is not because they are short on plot or even lost their originality, but they are merely a different style compared to the usual ones.

it may be like this because they are more focused on pursuing wealth now. who wouldn't want more money with easier work?

I agree that the 12 episodes part being..... Qute annoying. That 1 cour format has hurt some of the LN adaptations. Like having crappy pacing and cut off contents.

On the other hand, those short 5,7,or 12 mins anime are quite a different segment I think, and they've been there for a while. I haven't seen the most recent ones but I think they are meant to be short. Like for example, their original source were episodic 4koma or something. In this case, I don't see the problem of their anime adaptations being 5 minutes show.

Animes used to be 26 episodes, then they had single season animes show up with 13 episodes. Afterwards 26 turned into 25 and then 24 and 12. Nowadays some are even 10-11 episodes.

That said the 5-12 minutes episodes were pretty common even back in the day, one of the ones that was popular off the top of my head was Di Gi Charat which had one of the early memes of dejiko beam!

I mean in general, a lot of 4-koma mangas ended up as 5-12 min or those that did have full episodes were just a batch of them.

I approve. It's better for the show to use the authors material than for some hack to come in and add more just to fill the time slot. One of the worst phrases for me in regards to media is "creative licence."
