I was bored in class and wanted to make more nuffies to supply my random nuffie donations, so I thought I'd do some sh*tposting. ... Yeah... uh, that didn't quite happen as planned. This will go over what/who Prinz Eugen is, her nickname as Radioactive Pudding, paraphrase the history of Prinz Eugen according to wikipedia, and how she fared in Operation Crossroads. Note: I know the citations are subpar (especially the in-text citations) but I can't be bothered. What is Prinz Eugen? Prinz Eugen was an Admiral Hipper class warship of Nazi Germany, and was launched in August 1938. Notably, Prinz Eugen was escort to Bismarck during the Battle of Denmark Strait (Wikipedia). In all the time since then, Japan's plague of anthropomorphizing things had extended far and wide. Prinz Eugen was no exception to its clutches and was subsequently "kawaii-ed". This happened through Kancolle, a game which excels at wait timers and salting its admirals thoroughly (Fandom). Why is Prinz Eugen at Times Referred to as, 'Radioactive Pudding'? Prinz would be pronounced with 'purin-', which in Japan can refer to pudding. Radioactive comes from her use in Operation Crossroads, wherein she was used as one of many targets for nuclear testing. She has also been called Pringles ("Fan Nickname / Kantai Collection"). Paraphrased History of Prinz Eugen Shortly after being commissioned for service on the first of August, 1940, she was chosen to participate in Operation Rheinübung as Bismarck's escort. This was decided due to the unavailability of Scharnhorst and Gneisenau whom had managed Operation Berlin with success prior. Tirpitz, too, was unable to accompany Bismarck and Prinz Eugen; although due to the crew not being fully trained rather than necessary repairs (Wikipedia). And so Prinz Eugen set out with Bisko and three destroyers through a strait by Southern Norway and the Jutland. The Battle of Denmark Strait soon follows and Prinz Eugen departs from Bismarck's side to raid commerce. Engine problems soon surface however, and she changes her destination to occupied France. More specifically, Brest (Wikipedia). Following repairs and severe bombing of Brest, Prinz Eugen, Scharnhorst, Gneisenau, and their escorts participated in Operation Cerberus. Also known as the "Channel Dash," due to the fact that the operation called for the ships to pass through the English Channel (Wikipedia). No damage was suffered by Prinz Eugen, and her crew had only one death due to aircraft strafing according to Busch (qtd. in Wikipedia). For a time, Prinz Eugen was then used as a training ship in the Baltic Sea. This ended as the Russian Army threatened the German ground forces at the Eastern Front. (If you've read this far, please type 'Pudding compels you to give me 88 nuffies' to receive 88 nuffies. Only the first and second person to reply with such shall receive nuffies.) Prinz Eugen was used to support ground forces through shelling (Wikipedia). Afterwards, Prinz Eugen was sent to Copenhagen where she was decommissioned on the seventh of May, 1945. Irradiated Pudding in Operation Crossroads Prinz Eugen was given to the U.S as a war prize, after "three lots were then drawn lottery style from his(Arthur H. Graubart) hat with the British and Soviet representatives drawing the lots for other ships and Graubart being left with the lot for Prinz Eugen." according to Busch. (qtd. in Wikipedia) She was then used in Operation Crossroads, which "was a major test of the effects of nuclear weapons on warships of various types." She survived both the air and underwater blast with minimal damage, although thoroughly doused with radiation. Among the minor damage, was a leak in her hull. This later caused Prinz Eugen to sink in shallow waters at Kwajalein Atoll. (Wikipedia) I believe you can go scuba diving there and visit the wreck now. Thank you for reading! I know right? I was just gonna explain the nickname and be done with it. But nope, had a whole period to spare so I gave in to boredom.
Oh btw, if anyone wants to look at the list of ships used at Operation Crossroads: https://www.scubadoctor.com.au/article-bikini-atoll-nuclear-target-fleet.htm
Wtf, even more beautifully written than papers I actually put effort(more less or so) to write. Suffice to say, you have gained a new follower today.
