Hi all, I'm new to this site, and was just wondering if the novelupdates rating is accurate for each novel? Hope the veterans here could give me your opinions.
Not always, sometimes for example the rating of a novel is a lot lower due to the translation quality being low, not the story. Some novels get a lot of good ratings due to the beginning being good but the later chapters are shit. In general the rating is relatively accurate, though novels with the "harem" tag seem to get a lot of hate just for having the harem tag
People are biased by nature, so you may agree or disagree with the ratings given however I believe the ratings that user's give the novels they read are usually sincere. But then you get those a**holes who give a novel a 1* when only a single chapter comes out, or just because the genre or tags offend them; without reading it at all. I recommend reading the reviews or at least the first chapter to see if the translation is up to your speed, and they could point out things a simple rating system can't. If you're worried about spoilers from reviews; don't. They should all be contained in a spoiler tag.
Ratings and the popular novel list are, to put it mildly, garbage. Reviews kinda tend to be shit too but reviews from certain users tend to be okay to nice
Anything with around 3* or less are almost guaranteed to be bad. But anything with 4* or more aren't guaranteed to be good. Like someone else said, reading the reviews would be more accurate (make sure to check both the good reviews and bad reviews.)
Yeah, I just noticed cause I saw Against the gods with 4* rating and is on top novel list so I thought its good. But after seeing the review, it seems many hate it.
Also keep in mind that the star ratings, for the most part, reflects the opinion of the majority of the audience/readers but you might end up as the minority who hates/loves the story.
Against the Gods is the all time 3rd most popular novel on Novel Updates based on the number of people who've added it to their reading list. While it's cheap, trashy entertainment and people will never run out of things to insult about it, it is entertainment, and a lot of people enjoy it as such. Even people who do insult it might still read it.
I suggest you read the summary first, and if it feels like it is interesting for you then you can try reading the first 10 chapters of it, and decide whether you should continue or not.
You should treat it with a grain of salt. What you like and might differ from the recommendations of others.
I have a question about NU ratings too. I just rated a novel. Wanted to give it 2 stars but accidentally clicked on 3 stars. Can I correct my mistake? And how?
Most of the time no. There are these special people who automatically rate a story 1 star just because they hated a genre in it There are also just flat out bad translations
