Question Why do they keep saying "beautiful as a jade"

    Every time I read this metaphor, I imagine this sparkly green faced women. (And it really creeps me out (-_-*).

    I don't get it, is there no other praise for beauty in Chinese ?...

    Jade is properly white. Most of the time it's supposed to mean 'mutton fat' jade which is a nice pure white color...

    Jade personifies beauty, class, immortality and much more in Chinese culture.. And jade comes in different colors other than green too

    Google white jade for images. The different colors are from various impurities or other minerals mixed in. The west was primarily exposed to the green variety as it was more exotic and sold well.

    edit (addition): If you have ever felt good quality jade, the stone is smooth and surprisingly "soft" to the touch, and the qualities of light complexion, smooth, and flawless are what it ascribes towards a person's own features.

    Oh, I usually think of smooth pale skin with elegant features.....I might have read too many light novels.

    Jade is the most precius gem in chinese culture. It's like saying in english things like "teeth like pearls" or "eyes like sapphires". To be more precise, "jade beauty" (taking into account that they mean mutton fat jade) is literally the same as "alabaster beauty" in english (or "ivory beauty").

    isnt jade Green? if i read "as beautiful as jade" i think they speak of Flawless and charming Skin.

    So jade in Chinese refers to the white huh?.

    As mentioned, Chinese jade is white. As to why whiteness represents desired beauty, it's because it implies the girl is not a commoner and her family is probably wealthy. A village girl working the fields will be tanned and will generally have rougher skin, whereas a girl purposely raised indoors as a pampered beauty layered with cosmetics will be pale. Only a well off family could afford to have nonproductive children so potential suitors can bank on getting a decent dowery. Bonus if said white girl had her feet crippled by binding to give her future husband extra prestige for showing that he's capable of supporting a nonproductive wife (who can't escape their relationship, just in case).

    Ancient Chinese, though not so ancient, think about the 1950s though to be fair, most died in the Chinese Civil War and Communism.
    Couldn't run away fast enough. Wonder why lol.
