Lies! Antartica and the Arctic are still free of the taint! Only once the penguins and polar bears become Christian do we need to call for the Exterminatus!

You mean like the verbal tics that seem to be strangely common? Yeah, those can be supremely annoying the way they're commonly used. I have no problems with titles and honorifics though

Exactly, many use culture as an excuse but last I checked when Koreans and Japanese speak English, they don't add honorifics

I hate the names in Korean, Chinese (sometimes its Ok). It's hard to remember. Japanese is ok, coz they appropriated it. If the setting is western-like, they use western. Unlike, Chinese and Korean, they still use native name. Also, Japanese is more of snu snu, which I hate sometimes. Chinese has lot of wordings and comedic encounter, which is annoying sometimes, especially for long read. Korean novels, I dont read much of Korean and all I can say is, it is overly dramatic.

The plus point of CN and KN is both are good, construction wise. But, I have to say, 200+ chapters and it turns shit.

For me, Japanese fulfills my fantasy. Harem. And knowing that it will be animated, I feel special when my friends watched it, I tend to spoil them.

Chinese dont use western names in western setting fantasy.

When it comes to writing novels. It all comes down to the writer, really, since styles differ from person to person.

For example it would make sense for a Novel to not include honorifics if the writer is of American Japanese background and vice versa.

But honestly I feel like Japanese novels doesn’t deserve a bad rep. But frankly it’s just how they write.

I know some that do eg Lord of Mysteries. My point is that honorifics are out of place especially in a western setting.
What is your issue with Japanese novels being too snu snu?
Is it the plot or honorifics like goshujosama with erotic undertones?

:notlikeblob: you forget to add 'translations' to your title, your title just sounds like badmouthing japanese novels :hmm:

idk, last time I heard there's no marking on who's speaking in a (japanese)novel, and translators might have to depend on verbal-tic sentences to differentiate characters

so, I'd argue a good translator should remove the sentence suffixes and add proper who's speaking

I think it's kinda sexy how they don't call eachother by the first name automatically. Just fifty years ago and that would have been default way of meeting someone.....Mr, Miss, Mrs.... It means that only intimate/friendly people should get to use your most beautiful of names, your first name. \o/ It's a layer of civility that we lost in the west. :(

But then, I love all those period novels like Emma, Wuthering Heights, etc.

How they write our or how the translator chooses to convey it?
Translators have admitted to changing the story eg Amber Sword and Strongest Salaryman.
You have to wonder if it was really the author's intention or a translator who learned Japanese through erotic visual novel is projecting that erotic style in their translations

    you are again.. wrong

the reason chinese and korean novels have surpassed japanese ones is because of the fresh take essentially. we read japanese novels since the start. chinese novels and korean ones despite the cancer they also carry, is a fresh thing

and translators constantly pick up trash to translate since yenpress is worse than qidian in what they block

over written snu snu is what I hate in JLN. I also hated super dense MC. But, it's not like I dont read them.

The plot? It is okay, I dont mind cliche. And yeah, honorifics should be observed.
