Mix and match? I would borrow from existing mythologies, but change it up a bit, put my own spin on it. :hmm:

Why don't take the hybrid approach?

The Third Great Pancontinental Conflict (often abbreviated to GPC3), also known as the First Magitech War, was a pancontinental war that lasted from 693 to 725. The vast majority of the Continent's countries—including all the magic kingdoms —eventually formed two opposing military alliances: the Coastal Alliance and the Inland Pact. A state of total war emerged, directly involving more than 150 million people from over 42 countries. The major participants threw their entire economic, industrial, scientific, and magical capabilities behind the war effort, blurring the distinction between civilian and military resources. The Third Great Pancontinental Conflict was the deadliest conflict in humanity history, marked by 60 to 105 million fatalities, most of whom were civilians in the Socialist State of Husky and Celestial Republic of Chowchow. It included massacres, the genocide of the Archaemagos, strategic magical bombing, widespread use of Magitech weapons, premeditated death from starvation and disease, and the only use of meteor summoning in war.

Original world. That way no one can add "nationalist", "bigot" or "racist" to a review of your novel, y'know?

Nah, just call one group chinos, yellows or blacks and you have racism.
The best stories to me, usually have the oppressed race fighting against the supreme race

I would say original mythology unless you are actually doing proper research on real world mythology.
Mostly because when creating original mythology you at least have some more reason to think it through rather than just copy pasting random stuff.

It seems better to go with the original world, because of the huge amount of another world type stories. Summoned, reincarnated, transmigrated, etc.

it depends on what sort of story. All original world has it's benefits but it takes a lot more work to construct. Using the real world is a bit easier but would require some tweaking or altering to try and avoid any problems.

If you're going for a setting that is similar to our world in technology (or magical technology), you can use our world. It's hard to beat the complexity that naturally evolved here with something you just made up.
Feel free to leave pointers that this is an alternate world so that the readers will not be able to point out inaccuracies.
On the other hand, you aren't allowed to declare any real group of people to be Always Chaotic Evil orcs - that will get you too much hate. For example, in Strike Witches, even though the Neuroi control Germany and try to take over the world, there are human Germans who are fighting on humanity's side.
You can enjoy your political ambitions in near-future sci-fi (like cyberpunk) by making countries split and merge to your liking. It's not like anybody can really predict how it's going to be.

But if you're going for a fantasy world - feel free to abandon reality and just make things up as you go. The readers aren't here for a history or geography lesson. You can still base your countries on real ones.

In space sci-fi, you'll have to make up a lot of things anyway, so relying on real countries isn't useful. In my experience, having Space Russian Empire and United Stars of America makes the story too cheesy, so avoid basing your future countries on real countries.

Original world because you aren't constrained by the limits of reality.

I prefer an original created world. It allows freedom in adding in your own ideas to further the plot. Using an existing world such as earth is also fine since Readers can relate to your story easier without sinking into the imagination. My novel The Red Lands is one based on a fantasy world but with similar conditions to medieval earth. I like the freedom to add in magic and fantasy beasts. :)
