(Rant) Almost pure MTL translators with shady ads.

So...... normally I’m like respect all translators regardless if they’re machine translating or slow with translating, but recently I read a translation that was just going way to damn far. I read a few chapters and it’s basically lnmtl. I would post screenshots to compare the “translations” with google translate, but I’m on mobile so that’s hard. But literally it’s not much different from pure MTL. For example, the Clan is called a Horde. The English is just... oof. People are being called “it” and I can hardly understand what’s going on. On second thought, google translate might even be better. Not joking, try reading chapters 10-20 which was all I read. I checked out 174 in hopes it got better but... no dice.

Now if that was it, I wouldn’t be nearly as annoyed. I’d just stop reading. What really pissed me off were the porn and webcam model pop up ads. Bro, there’s minors reading and I don’t want to get a virus or have somebody walk in and see a bunch of near naked women on my screen. Seriouslyyyyy if you put ads, don’t make them pop up soft porn and make your translations legible .

Okay, rant over XD. If you managed til here, niceeee. I’m on mobile so maybe this just applies to mobile but still.

EDIT: Huh so it's interesting because the pop up ads only happen on mobile view (at least for me). Also while I was looking for a contact page to tell the translator the problem, I noticed him saying English wasn't his first language and acknowledging his translations were subpar so I kind of regret making this post so hastily oof, since if he really didn't know about the mobile ads, it would've really been a dick move of me. I'm going to go take out the novel name then ig because he might really not know about the ads (ads are a pain in the arse to work with, from experience)

EDIT 2: Well never mind then! So he knows his pop up ads are crap. He also says he's not using Google Translate when it's almost word to word. He also isn't getting an editor. Okay whatever I'm done.

 

If you really have a proof where their translations aren't that different than MTL like google, you can try report it, amirite @Westelle?

Oh it's edited MTL, so it's not as bad as I thought. At least he kinda edited it. Still though, I really wish they would edit it more instead of getting as many done ASAP and putting pop up ads for the $...

Yeah, that's why I hesitated before posting because I was liek... ugh so much drama. But at the same time, it irked me so much. I mean I'm a bit biased too lmao, Jade was originally translating it slowly but accurately while this guy kinda just grabbed it less than two months from when Jade last released it with just meh translations, then milking the hell out of it.

 

You do know ads are personalized to you right? It's based on your search history, websites you visited and etc.

 

That's only for Google Adsense and it's affiliated partners like Ezoic lol which don't accept websites that are subdomains (I.e this dude which has a .blogspot domain)

 

NU doesn't discriminate between skilled translators or machine assisted or completely machine translated. Even if it's completely machine translated, as long as it doesn't match any of the common machine translation softwares, it'll pass. There was a title that someone else brought up some weeks back that was horribly translated. Ai-chan doesn't read translations since Ai-chan read direct from syosetsu, so Ai-chan didn't know about it until someone else brought it up. Then Ai-chan had a look and was extremely annoyed.

How can anyone mess up a translation so badly? Ai-chan checked with google translate to see if it was outright copy-paste, but it wasn't. Google translate translated the chapter correctly in most cases. Or at least google translate translated the chapter better than that translator. It was like his translation was of lower quality than even machine translation.

Some argued that it was a translation of a translation. Okay, so maybe that's true. But the point is, it should be readable. By readable, it should be something that makes sense, something that is not going to make people require paracetamol, something that should not give people headaches. It should not make people lobotomize themselves or put themselves into sickbeds trying to understand nonsense. It's a translation, not a brain rape.

@Tony I personally think that instead of basing the standards on 'machine translation', it should be based on 'readability'. That is, regardless of the level of machine assistance, the defining standard of a translation that can be listed should be whether or not they make people clinically sick. If you get a headache from reading bad translation, that's a medical issue.

Nope. There was one ad with the logo covering the content. It was at the beginning so I didn't see clearly but it was something like popupadnetwork or something. But as far as I remember, Google Adsense doesn't support pop up ads. They mainly do display ads.

 

did you use chrome browser ? there's a feature to blacklist intrusive ads

 

Yep I did. It gave me a notification that 2 pop up ads were blocked, but then as I kept reading, one or two still kept popping up even though I got the notification. I read about 7-8 chapters before I stopped and kept getting them :/. Oh but I noticed that when i switched to desktop view, it stopped completely, so that's a solution.

Oh wait wow yeah, that's true. I just tried going through a few chapters on desktop and didn't see a single ad. I don't have any sort of ad blocker on my computer either. Hmm, that's really interesting..... I wonder if the translator even knows then.

 

I think some of the "new TL" are actually third-language translation based on their weird TLs. Even if they use Google Translate, the translation wouldn't be that 'weird',,,

Then again there are some TL who translate through a third language, just like me : Japanese-->Yukkurinese-->Indonesian-->West Frisian -->ProtoUralic-->Middle French-->Normandy-->Lanchashire-->Cthulhian-->Weird English

Also, if you spot shady ads, that's the point where you open the page with a 10-foot long bamboo pole called "goggle cache text-only", just like when you have to read from an aggregator.
