Touchy topic. At this point, I dont give a shit who plays what part. Robert Downey Jr played a black dude. But more importantly, take a look at videogame voice actors and actresses. There are white men playing the part of black men all the time. I say get the best part for the role. There was that fiasco with scarlett Johansson and Ghost in the Shell, right? I'm kind of more with them on this. I mean fundamentally anime is just japanese cartoons, but the subject matter... ranges from appropriate for all ages to adults only. In that regard I think that saying anime aren't cartoons is the better way to go, because people are often careless about letting their children watch animated shows and movies. It's less about the japanese view of anime, and more about the western view of cartoons being for kids. I remember being in a library when a parent asked one of the staff if a manga was safe for a kid to read ... Meanwhile I was reading a detective one featuring images of corpses and nudity. Just there on the shelf where any unattended child could pick it up. So yeah, anime aren't cartoons, and manga aren't comics.
nah, bro. In the 50s and 60s, there were tons of adult cartoons featuring things from sex to nightmares. or was it more towards the 70s? I don't know, i didn't live back then
And that is a common perception? I never said I thought cartoons are strictly for kids, then or now. I said that there is a perception that that is the case. And good, bad or otherwise that is far too often the case. And while that isn't even true for cartoons, that is doubly not true for anime.
What I am saying is, anime is more of Japanese Animation. Cartoons are an animation. Saying cartoons are primarily for kids I feel is the same as saying anime is japanese cartoons. But hey. It's the internet. Potayto potahto
That's honestly the only reasonable argument I ever heard on the matter over why not call Animes Cartoon. I personally prefer to differ them simply because the style is vastly different, but... Well, if someone asks me if an anime is a cartoon, I'll say yes, though different from the western ones.
It's not just a problem with Japanese anime, but most foreign media. It all just boils down to parenting skills... and in most cases Americans are either like honey badger and just dont give a fuck or are over protective. *shrug* Me, I encouraged mine to read manga and anime, but warned them there is some really sick twisted shit out there... as far as I know, none of them seemed to have spent much time within the dark twisted paths of the dark side of the culture.
