Oh... That's one way to do it. How about the ones that released large bulk of full, non split chapters though?.....well, never mind. This talk about bulk release made me remember about w*bnovel's blatantly rip off "privileges" system. Not getting mass release normally anymore is quite sad:blob_teary:

You should read up on the Lezhin scandals
Thanks to companies like Amazon and Netflix
People think Market share translates into profits.
It doesn't, the models that many promote is not sustainable
Unlike in China, where webnovel pays authors based on how much their novels earn
For English audiences, whether anyone buys the novels, Webnovel pays for the translation.
It is too similar to the traditional physical book model with less than 5% profit margin at best.
I should know because I was translating novels no one read and paying for it
Unless Webnovel starts paying translators based on solely Spirit Stones sales their model will not work
So I can understand the reason behind the privilege system
Also with so many ways to get free Spirit Stones, the value is diluted.
1000 Spirt stones does not really convert to hard currency since I can watch videos, vote etc to get Spirit Stones.
The best bet is that Tapas.io picks up more novels and more competition from Tapread, Zhong whatever it is called and other Chinese publishers entering the English market leads to better win-win solutions
Readers want to win and Webnovel tries to win, it leads to lose-lose

Yeah, And people who just wants to read normally by following the system properly (like purchasing SS) got dragged into the mess. I mean, we're fine with paying chapter release. But the double lock on the advanced chapters are a little too much I think.

To me, it reminds me of the Netflix Qwikster debacle.
A company not making money, panics and is forced to walk back their changes.
I don't see any need to worry too much

You can always read from my website after I launch it.
All my novels will have Harem + Ecchi + Loli
    The perfect Trifecta :blobowoevil_horns:
No need to buy Spirit Wuji Stones, just watch videos to earn stones :blobangel:

    I am so scared.:blob_teary:
I am shitting my non existent underpants
    I rather go commando. :blobcat_knife:

You are making guesses, I do not vet my translations using reader comments. I have other ...
Crap! it is an obvious trap! I cant believe that I fell for it.

The CEO of Yen Press does not read all his translations
The CEO of Kadokawa does not read all his novels
I have staff who do the vetting, it is not my readers.
And they are at least fluent in both languages.
    Over and out!

...you said it yourself, you're not interested in the titles that he hosts . If you had seen his site a year ago, you'd know what I was talking about.

Why do you think he's so bitter? He found out his get rich scheme wasn't going to work. (read: optimizing ad income by filling every square inch of screen real estate and maximizing the clicks wasn't bringing in so much dough that he could plug his ears and ignore the reader complaints. Quite frankly, you can thank us for the subdued current site)

    ..... *silent condescending stare* @@
That said, I do think you have a firm grasp on what reality is, grim and dirty and ruthless, but nevertheless true. Though that slap on my face hurts, that comment there made me spent weeks digging around reading up on IP and copyright and such, and I thank you for it, made me a lot wiser on things that I wasn't so sure before.

Like I said, I have spoken to J-novel and translated their licensed novels with permission as long as I delete the chapters they have caught up to eg Reincarnated Into Werewolf and If It Is For My Daughter I Will Defeat The Demon Lord
It is a grey area because if there is no official translation then you are not impacting the IP's owner ability to earn.
At the end of the day, there is cost to translate even if it is unlicensed content.
    Actual translation work is involved.
I need to earn to cover those costs, those who physically translate themselves might just need to donate free time but I am different.

Also, my Harry Potter quote which you are citing out of context is about translators who translate web novels when there is already a licensed translated light novel.
They are impacting the IP owner's ability to earn
I deleted all my chapters of the J novel properties.
    Cheers!

    P. S I have a photographic memory...well eidetic memory according to Sheldon from Big Bang Theory, albeit a faulty one.
If you want to play the "quoting game" , I have already won.

I... thought it was a lot simpler than that, taking away all that part about impacting earning and having to cover cost for things. (Which, we all do, seriously, who doesn't need money to live?)

I thought what determines whether or not it's legal is whether or not you have permission to do so, having a licensed publisher or no doesn't change that. And since, for those IP, you have permission from the publisher that holds those IP specifically, that makes what you do perfectly legal. No grey areas there.

But even for IP without a publisher, the author can still request unauthorized use of his/her works be taken down, because it's the author's IP and it's illegal to use it without the author's permission. Whether or not they take actions to request that the law be enforced doesn't change that.

So perhaps I was too quick to assume that you haven't obtained permission from all of the authors whose works your website translates. If you had it covered already, then what you're doing is completely legal. But, if you haven't, then it's illegal. No grey areas there.

    Or, was I mistaken?

I have made my points, let us agree to disagree.

I am quite satisfied with this thread. Maybe I can finally get a thread locked but I won't bet on it
