I advice you to read fluff yaoi first as they were harmless and much into sweet and fluffy experience. Its good for beginners to start there

The Earth is Online is definitely an entry level. Yuri on ice anime is also a good suggestion. I also agree about the Founder of Diabolism, it's very tame until it's not, and the story and angst was intriguing.

I suggest you Reborn as My Love Rival’s Wife, which is actually a gender bender. Technically it's BG. But for some reason some people put in in BL list (since the MC was male inside, so, yeah, you can also see it as BL). So, I think it would be a good transition.

I'd like to to recommend Number One Lazy Merchant of the Beast World from Chrysanthemum garden. It's full of fluff and super cute. Also, check on Rainbow turtle's (the translator of above novel, Earth is Online and was the translator of omniscience reader), her novel choices tend to be on the tame side.

 

If you’re starting out, it’s better to start with “shounen ai” not “Yaoi” , Yaoi is more graphic whilst shounen ai is pure with no sex.

I vote for the “Earth is Online” , this author likes writing about sex entirely in metaphors lol, so there’s not really much sexual stuff going on. Greate plot, characters though, I went for the BL and stayed for the plot, love it.

If you don’t mind manga recs
(No sex, great characters, nice stories and just lovable)

Hidamari ga kikoeru (this has some problems from the 3rd series onwards, but before that it’s a masterpiece)
Seven days (short, cute, nice)
Koimonogatari (really nice protrayl of homosexuality in reality, a love story)

There’s also “shimanami tasogare”, buts that’s closer to a thematic exploration of the lgbt in Japan than it is BL. But it’s a unique manga, one of its kind, and I absolutely recommend it to anyone who loves artistic mangas.

 

whatever you do, just don't trust whatever the fujoshis say.

If they describes a novel like "fluffy", "cute", "loving pair" or other seemingly positive things, that just means MC is a weak bottom bitch who constantly gets raped by strong ML until the MC starts "liking it" in a hentai-like fashion...

Oh and you definitely want to stay away from anything "Mpreg" "omegaverse" "ger" and what not. (Basically different variants of men getting pregnant)


And at the end of the day, just keep in mind that 99.99% of these novels are by women for women. It doesn't mean that they're automatically bad, it just means that you're most likely not part of the target audience.

Basically danmei is like that saying about there always being an asian guy who could do better. You could always find a good one depending on your favorite genre~

What novels have you been reading??? In addition to being untrue, that last part is insulting to any translators no matter the genre. On the other hand, I agree that OP should stay away from most omegaverses, a good proportion of them have adult themes~

 

Start with BG gender benders, here's the two I recommend:
Dominion’s End - F->M. Has BL fan service but it's not BL. Good apocalypse themed novel.
Reborn as My Love Rival’s Wife - M->F. He becomes a woman but inside he is still considers himself as a man. Hilarious.

If you can handle both above, you can start with "entry level" BLs.
The Earth is Online / God Level Summoner - already suggested by others so I'm not gonna expound on them
A Crowd of Evil Spirit Lines up to Confess to Me - Comedy/Horror. No explicit scenes (as of 100+), All you'll find here is the ML "taking an interest" to the MC.
Master of Trading Star Card Game - Gaming/Transmigration.
King of Classical Music - Reincarnation/Music. Good amount of chapters translated and as of now it's still entry level.
Seizing Dreams - I really like this one. Interesting themes with great characters. It won't get heated until around chapter 90 but I'm sure it can still be considered in entry level (to my disappointment).
Death Progress Bar - I'm up to date to current translated chapter and is still in entry level. Dunno about the future tho.

Things to avoid:
Quick Transmigrations / World Hopping - As much as I like them, I can't recommend them as they are usually heavy on the sexual themes. Try them once you get comfortable with BL novels.
Possessive / Yandere Male Leads - Most of the time this means the ML can get "pushy".

 

Right? On the other hand, I had a very interesting discussion recently with someone in one of my threads looking for gers. They asked about the trope and concluded Omegas as a flat-chested version of futanaris (which they apparently loved). Thus, they wanted to start trying BL out by reading omegaverse stories, despite my warnings. I kind of want to know how that went.

Definitely The Earth is Online. I know it’s been recc’ed over and over, but it really is the best one that fits your requirements.
And if you don’t mind the lovey dovey fluff, maybe A Guide to Raising Your Natural Enemy and Reborn into a Hamster for 233 Days as well. Though most of the reason that there’s no steamy content is because at least one of the characters is in animal form. Doesn’t mean they aren’t attracted, so if that bothers you, disregard the recs.
...if you’re starting BL, you might wanna try Dominion’s End and The Legend of Sun Knight first of everything. They’re both NOT BL, but they sure have a lot of BL fan service.

I kind if see where they are coming from. Maybe not so much novels, but gawd the webcomic world has more then a few brainless fanatics like that. BL webcomics comment section is pretty cringey at times. Its my least favorite genre to scroll through comments of. A third should really be searching for porn. Another third, is like "omgggg look at the way ML1 looks at ML2, they are like a married couple already" at the 12th comic panel of the first episode

 

I think the best way for beginners to get into yaoi is to go straight for the smut. You may get traumatized at first but will soon find yourself desensitized and then the road becomes easy. With that saying, read Hyperventilation and maybe Lover Boy. Both are webtoons

 

Spring Trees and Sunset Clouds
I feel that anyone could like this novel not just BL lovers. The characters change and develop throughout the story. It's very heartwarming when the MC wants to live again and accepts the ML, problems and all. Oh yeah!! The only smut scene is in the last chapter.
Spirit Hotel
This novel is super funny and again this is just a good novel overall. The MC and the rest of the characters work together so well. There are some smut scenes at the very end and in the extras but they're not very descriptive like other novels.
Quickly Wear the Face of the Devil
this was my first quick transmigration novel and only one so far haha. the MC and ML are very physically affectionate... like a lot, but there aren't any actual smut scenes, it usually just kissing.
Waiting For You Online
it's still being translated and I haven't finished it yet but it's pretty good. no smut scenes so far~~ the gameplay scenes are a little meh but~~~ its still pretty nice.

for a beginner who's not into too much graphic stuff, i'd recommend more of the action-y BL novels that focus more on plot, or ones with the graphic scenes clearly marked so you can skip them. as far as that goes:

• 'Ghosts Know What I Experienced' - a supernatural mystery type novel, with a hilarious take on modern fantasy. the mc and ml are adorable and it's very pure, there's a bit of action and lots of comedy. 7/10
• 'The Earth is Online' - a survival game novel with Lots of puzzles and plot, and a mystery that unfolds as it goes. there are some mild graphic things around chapter 200+ but it's very rare and easy to skip if you're not into it, and it mostly focuses on the plot and the teamwork between the mc and ml. 9/10
• 'i have medicine' - pill concocting martial arts tournament style xianxia novel. so far there's very little progress relationship-wise between the two leads, but Plenty of interaction, and later on it's more of a warm-fuzzies kind of romance as far as i'm aware. 6/10, a bit draggy for my tastes but pretty typical xianxia
• 'tian guan ci fu' or 'heaven official's blessing' - it's one of my all time favourites. VERY funny xuanhuan detective novel, the plot and world-building are wonderful, the side characters are wonderful, the romance is so sweet it made me believe in true love, the angst tears me apart, and there's no graphic stuff at all, tho i'd warn for some pretty graphic violence in book four, and lots of body horror the whole way through. 10/10

there are also a few novels i'd rec that aren't actually BL but have no other romance and can absolutely be read as BL:

• 'Omniscient Reader's viewpoint' - really great survival game that goes FAR beyond that. starts as your typical 'i read this novel now i'm in it' kind of story and rockets into an incredible edge-of-your-seat plot within about 70 chapters. the characters are all incredible and loveable, and the relationship between our mc and the original protagonist of the novel is really great in a lot of ways, they both give each other meaning. 10/10, love this one
• 'the s-classes that i raised' - a modern apocalypse, monster raising, plot filled action adventure. it's funny, it's badass, the mc is morally grey and great because of it. a specific part of the mc's powers makes it very easy to read a few of his relationships with men as BL. so far 9/10, can't wait to get into the good stuff when the plot starts moving
• 'trash of the count's family' - hopeful action-packed fantasy novel. another, 'i read this novel now i'm here' thing, but a different take than orv. not going to lie, this isn't as well written as some of the others, but i genuinely love it to pieces. the character interactions are wonderful and warm, the plot is A Lot deeper than it first appears, and the action from around chapter 150 is... Real Good. everything goes pretty smoothly for the mc, but in a way that has a lot of charm to it. as far as BL, he has great chemistry with the crown prince and the original protagonist. if i was rating it on technicalities i'd give it a 7/10, but for my pure enjoyment factor, it's definitely 10/10

I'm huge fan of survival manga such as Alice in Borderland, kamisama no iutori. And the most legendary of them, Battle Royale.

Earth is Online might be shonen ai, but the type is more like Shounen jump manga, with the earth attacked by super powered and super smart alien beings and thus 6 billion of earth inhabitants are forced to enter death of alive survival game. (Hunger games but with global scale)

If Earth is Online is not shonen ai and made or redrawn as japanese manga, I think this will be very famous manga
