Just recently, I've met some pretty... I don't know if "dumb" is the right word, but a somewhat disagreeable person. He told us that novels and or entertainment in general are tricking us, the author designed it that way so looking forward to it is getting fooled. To put it simply, it is dumb to get excited over something somebody else decide the next part. He has a point but there are so many things wrong in that I can't even go into detail. What didn't sit right to me is that he is very intelligent, for sure. But to think even on the ranks of the most rational and realistic people such views exist. I wonder how he enjoys entertainment if he doesn't want to be tricked by mere writing. I know for one that he hate to lose and a frank person but still, it's too extreme of a view. What do you think? How common are these type of views on entertainment really?
Well I mean I can kind of see a certain point of view similar to that. Entertainment in the end is just a business with the express purpose of distraction. but at the same time people take fictional things and place so much faith and importance on them that entertainment is honestly lower on the list of the things to bitch about than these various things (one example being religion)
Wait, you have friends? jk jk I wouldn't take him too seriously. People have always pretended to be "above" things. When in reality they aren't. It's a phase all people go through.
It ain't chief. He's about 30 and that guy is relatively a walking encyclopedia on Engineering. He's just soo extreme I can't comprehend.
@Westeller even the most intelligent and rational person have their stupid moment but I'm somewhat agree with your friend since there are form of medias out there exists to brainwash you but that's up to your judgement
I assure you it is, even smart people are subject to it and age is of no relevance. They simply see things within their own reason but not the whole picture as a whole. They think they are above certain things but they aren't. It's pretty much the premise for hypocrisy.
The purpose of a novel is to entertain. Regardless of any other purpose, to educate, preach, disgust, anger, etc, a novel must entertain. Otherwise we won’t read it. Whether it tricks you, or not, if it entertains, it’s done it’s job. And if it fails to entertain, it won’t sell. I see absolutely NO problem with entertainment, novels, etc, tricking you. Shutter Island Sixth Sense Both great, both trick you.
Reminds me of this manga https://myanimelist.net/manga/62547/Yugami-kun_ni_wa_Tomodachi_ga_Inai The guy doesn't want friends and explains why. Edit:
Ask him if he can control his life. If not, ask him why he didn't kill himself yet. The unpredictability of the future is the best part of life, and this can be said to novels. I can't say for some of the novels, but the unpredictability of the situations in the novel is what makes it good. I mean, novels are in the end, entertainment. You can paint it with all the words you could think of but novels would always be entertainment. If he's not having fun with novels, no one's requiring him to do so. Edit: btw, how is this related to the poll?
I prefer girlfriend... oof. We're all intelligent then, since we can read. Dayum... I'll rest my case, but that really isn't a reason. Hypocrisy is universally common that it fails to objectify as a reason. Well, whatever friend~ I think it's more of a lifestyle of preference. He worships educational books so he might as well bring down those aren't. Then again, I respect him and his views. I'm the type to put all information when filling up something... it was in the thread creation process soo... Sorry? I can't resist
i wouldnt recommend that tho i think he is just too smart. it just his conclusion from thinking about entertainment lol :}
So, I had a lot to say to this, but I deleted everything and I'm just going to say this. Ask him if he likes sports, any television show. Does he read or watch any nonfiction show? If the answer to any of those questions is yes, then tell him it's stupid for him to invest time into watching sports because it's nothing but entertainment. That those documentaries are a complete and utter waste of time because unless he has actually taken what he has learned from those documentaries and put them to practical use then they are completely useless knowledge that not only takes up space in you're brain that could be devoted to your occupation, where you can actually contribute to society, but also wastes all the time it takes to ingest that information. Now question, you said he has a point? I haven't heard it. Someone decides the outcome of the story they write? That's kind of exactly how stories are written and why they are read. If you knew the outcome of the story there would be no suspense and no reason to read the story. Why read the story when you know the ending? BTW, is he an engineer as his occupation? Because I swear, if this dude has encyclopedic knowledge of something he doesn't use then this entire post was a waste.
People seek entertainment when their basic needs are fulfilled and it can come in many forms. Your friend may call novels and/or entertainment in general are tricking use because it makes us looking forward to it, can he say the same when educational books are written by somebody else and get regulated by the govt? P.S: don't take me seriously when I totally assume his character in my argument.
I remember that time when my friend told me to stop watching porn because I won't actually need the knowledge it gives. That damn bastard.
Jokes aside~ Is he adamant on saying you shouldn't reading novels every time he saw you reading one? or did it only happen one time?
Not close to common. Extremely sociopathic view that first begs the question of what happened to make him think that way. People don't naturally grow into that kind of view, even if they're intelligent in terms of cunning.
