Well it all depends on his essay context

If he wants to discuss shit... Well we have plenty here... He can discuss how badly novels can degenerate given people's expectations of low quality but high volume web novels.

I would love to recommend some Tom Clancy and/or Clive Cussler works, but I'm not sure how much time do you have to make the assignment

Well actually if you read farther into the novel you'll find that the author just forgets/drops the concept completely. But in my opinion the pop-ups weren't too bad and could be leveraged to write something interesting. What that interesting is escapes me right now as I'm brain dead from staying up to study AP Bio for too long.

Not going to argue about that one. Although Chinese xianxia and xuanhuan are near and dear to my heart they are pretty much copy and paste novels.

No, I fully realize that there is a huge difference between eastern and western web-fictions and that they often don't have the same level of quality, but as someone who has grown up with this sh*t I'd like to be able to write an essay on it and not have it dismissed as some type of fake book my teacher even when it meet the rubric requirements. This is especially more frustrating when the same teacher just let some other kid review a godd*nmed comic book.
Edit: Sorry if I seemed angry. I'm not. Just pissed at that old witch who was my 4th grade teacher. As if Bones was better than whatever web-novel I wanted to do at the time.

An honors English 10th year student should be reading a more meaningful book than that for a book report.

Tom Clancy and/or Clive Cussler are fun, but aren't they formulaic stuff with Mary Sue protagonists who don't have any kind of inner journey. And I'm guessing they completely wallpaper over nasty stuff about colonialism and empire, when they talk about "locals".

(This is guesswork, I read a stack of their output 25 years ago.)
