I second this. The company is not responsible for how she lives her personal life. But the company is responsible to make sure she's getting paid for the work she did.

Sorry man, at first I wanted to feel sorry you. Mistakes happen, I know you never meant this to happen. But the moment you start trying to make it sound like it is her fault that she is in her current predicament instead of admitting your mistake and try to fix them, you just became the douche in this situation.
    Just fix your mistake.

If it's a one-time event, apologize a bit. And if you know her and her family, and you're pretty confident that they're reliable you could offer a loan for a partial amount of the sum she can't cover, and if you know she's somewhat good in some household chores or something, you could even offer her a temporary job for a few days or what you need to do something, if she doesn't want charity.

But if accepts that and asks repeatedly for several months for your help, then I would become very sceptical about her. And if she had just bought something expensive enough and was waiting on that payment to cover the rent, you shouldn't really offer to help her more than this month, because then she might believe you'll always bail her out so she'll be reliant on you.

    Basically :
    • If their family is otherwise poor and has difficulties saving up, apologize and help if you want for the month
    • If their family is somewhat poor, but she/they had spent money on unnecessary expenses / shopping / entertainment that month and it would've been enough to cover the rent, then I would suggest apology, maybe help for the month but atleast pay for some therapy for them to learn to save money better.
    • If she normally has no problem , but is spending on something unnecessary and wait for the last day before due date to pay the rent with the paycheck she'll get at best days before it, you could try to counsel on it.
Basically 2. Apologize for the problem, but if you want to really help her, find out more about her, her situation and her reputation and then decide on the best solution you're willing to help her with.
Situations happen. Problems arise. Best to deal with the scenario somehow, because you never know what a single meeting with a random stranger might lead to in the future.

But if you're going to use one of the novels on the site as an inspiration... Just try and keep it legal, okay? Moral or immoral is up to you, but you don't want to make it illegal.

well depending on how many bills she has, the late fees wont be over 50 bucks i would say. I mean my Directv late fees are 8 dollars and its normally not more than that. As for rent, i would explain the situation to the landlord. Most are reasonable, and they want their money. They wont flake you over ONE missed payment, normally, unless they are serious assholes. Or perverts looking at if as an opportunity, in which case that girl is well and truly fucked if my knowledge of porn is any indication.

But still. Yes, people make mistakes. But if it were me that happened to, and i had to explain it to my landlord? I'd say, "Some people are shitty."

Meaning you in this case. I mean im not gonna make you out as a villain, bro, but if that happened to you and you had bills that had to be paid could you HONESTLY tell me you wouldn't be pissed off or anxious with worry? You dont know their situation. Maybe she cant get help from friends or family. Maybe she dont HAVE friends or family on the level of asking for loans.

All i'll say is that i cant take responsiblity for everyone, thats unreasonable. But then again not every one of them is crying to me about their bills. And if its just one person, and i have my own savings to fall back on, and if it's basically more of a loan i'll get back anyway....well. Thats just me.

True, you can't be held liable for other people's situations, but you are responsible for your job and mistakes that can and does happen. You and the company could be sued for breach of contract. Best to acknowledge your mistake and not blame the other affected party. Human error can't be entirely avoided...but I also see a problem with your system...

Since the missing digits managed to get passed through whatever system you're using, you and your team should see if a patch or upgrade can be implemented by the developer so you get an error or a prompt that says "missing digits or invalid number."

For new employees, one of my past work places does the plain old check for one or two pay periods before direct deposit or w/e payment plan you select.

I am a piece of work. She will be paid, just late. I know how important it is. I am sharing it cause I do feel bad about it. I really don’t want her to pay the fee. But there is really nothing I can do. I caught the mistake, report it to my boss and we move up the chain to the corporate level. It will be fixed. But because I can’t say for certain it will be deposit today, I apologize and had to watch her cry for something for I didn’t notice when I was entering the digital in. I did check. I check three times, but one cannot catch what one doesn't know.

Yea. That’s what my boss said too.

I didn’t. Sorry if it came off as that. But I didn’t. I get screw over too. I just take deep breathe and keep on going.

Not offended. I do feel bad. I had admitted my mistake, but then I can’t catch what I don’t know. And I didn’t know. Until one guy showed up and I was wondering what was going on. I dig and dig and found the cause. I immediately report. We caught it early and corporate responded to us. It should be fixed soon and she probably won’t be paying late fee on rent since most place gives tenant 1-5 days to pay.

I’m not in management. I did own my mistake and report it ASAP. That’s how we caught it early. :notlikeblob: There is nothing I can do. Now it’s all the corporate level.

I do need to rant to make me feel better. :blobexpressionless: I didn’t blame her for my guilt. I am guilty for making the mistake but then I can’t catch what I don’t know. Which I didn't know we had to add certain digits in but once I figure out the problem I had rushed to fix it asap. But even things are out of my control. Out of my control. Still my mindset is, at the end of the day you’re responsible for yourself, your love ones, and the bills. At the end of the day I made the mistake and contribute more shit in her life.

She’s a new hire. She hasn’t work that much. Claiming she needs to pay rent hurt me emotionally, cause I understand. I work with disadvantaged people, so I get it. But there is nothing I personally can do. Since we caught it early, I hope money would be deposit today. She cried cause I told her maybe next Tuesday, 9/3, as that’s what my boss told me. I don’t know how long it would be to redirect direct deposit. It’s labor week, so I also didn’t like it that she would have to worry over on a holiday.

And I have been screw before. I didn’t get my paycheck for two weeks!! Office sent paycheck, but then post office fail to send on time. They had to void the first and sent a new one. That’s why I’m always one to say, I expect my paycheck, but I know people make mistake and things happen, and so I do whatever I could to make up during emergency.

We don’t do that at my place. If employees give us bank account with missing number their payment is going to be late.

I’m just a little minion. Not much I can suggest or do.

Oh, if the employee gave you the account # with missing numbers....then it's technically not your fault.

It doesn't hurt to try and pass on the suggestion to your direct superior. At the same past workplace of mine, it took over 2 years for my suggestion to go through after I found a ton of bugs with the old system that they had been using for 7 years. Though quite frankly, I probably annoyed them to death since I was complaining to my boss nearly every week that the bugs were wasting my time and unproductive until the higher ups coughed up the money for an upgrade.

Corporate is one thing, if really need to, get your boss to float her a loan, or her supervisor. Feeling bad is one thing but her needing to pay her bills is another. 400 bucks isn't much, just get her a personal loan and let her pay off her bills first if really needed. DON'T let her borrow from those pay advance sites.

Welcome to life. Tell your boss you'll owe him a favour if he can help her temporarily.

You're not directly responsible right ? Then it's not your fault. You're feeling guilty and I'd say that's not a bad thing but if it become a mind torture for you then it's better to forget about it. You can also help her indirectly if it can ease your mind.

I am partially at fault for contributing. Her situation is hers, but we did make it worst if her paycheck isn’t deposit before the fifth; which I doubt. I can’t catch something I don’t know. I didn’t know we had to include three digits prior to the card #. A coworker was also working on it with me as well and also she looked over the instruction as well. We didn’t catch the needed digits. Our system at the corporate level also didn’t catch it either. I should have listen to my gut and asked my boss to run over one with me. All this could have been avoided.

I just bad feel for her, plus that I was a factor in it. It’s labor weekend. She’s supposed to relax, not worry about making her rent paycheck. But I doubt it’ll take them that long to get it done. Our corporate responded fast and we handed them the list total up to even less than 15. I have the feeling we should be able to deposit it over the weekend or on the third.

No no. I mean her paycheck total up to roughly 400. Rent around here are higher than that.

Maybe she already has other issue and the late paycheck was the last straw. Idk. I think corporate would work fast. It probably would be deposit on or before the 9/3. A lot of places give people 5 days to pay rent. She probably misunderstood something and thought it would be deposit next Friday and took my word as “unwavering truth.”

Shit happens and you have to always be prepared for it. You have to deal with the feels of guilt and not repeating the mistake if possible (we are all human after all) and the employee is gonna have to learn how to make ends meet for a week. It's not an easy situation, but you should not take on more of the guilt than is your fair share. Feel guilty for the mistake and it's consequences, but don't take one the employees lack of financial safety...that isn't your fault, it's theirs to sort out. Maybe you could have referred to it higher up to a manager? Maybe they could do something to help her in the meantime? That is what they get paid big bucks for. ^.^

I hate it when people cry. Sometimes it's like victimising themselves more that they actually are. True, there might be circumstances that we don't know about the employee whose pay got delayed, but isn't crying to the one who contributed to the mistake the last resort? Aren't one supposed to try and fix their problems as first priority?

I think crying is something that can't be helped as their default. While indeed there is crocodile tears crying can only happen when there's pain or overwhelming emotions. As an adult people have learns well not to be overwhelmed by emotions and to keep themselves under control but it does happen sometimes they just can't be helped.

Tbh, I don't know how being overwhelmed by emotion feels like so I can't say much in the matter. But my point was, even if OP made a mistake and had an indifferent tone as they narrated the story, the employee's priority should be solving the problem. Maybe she could ask for a favor from someone closer to her. I dunno. Something at least?

:blobconfounded: I was not indifferent, I believe. I was being as nice as I could. She kept pushing with all the reason why she’s crying: so I’m gonna have to tell my property management you apologized, but I’m still gonna pay the late fee?

While there is nothing I could do at my level. If I could, I would be pushing and stretching my hours long to get things straight. So I suck it up and tried to email my supervisor because she requested that I do and apologized at the same time.

And so, that why I’m reasoning the way I did and sounded like a douche bag. I know we and I make a mistake and our mistake contribute to her awful situation. This was our worst nightmare and we worked hard to avoid this. I mean hard. Before payroll I went through all reload cards and checked their numbers. Even after I make sure they were all pay. And they were!!! But seriously. I didn’t know. The error wouldn’t have happened if I do. But I dug around and found the cause and I reported it. So I guess I should have word it better. Something like, her financial situation wasn’t my fault. It’s like we were destiny to fall here.

But she sounds like she has no one and have no ways to cover the rent.:blobsad: I honestly wanna help her, loan her some money or something. But my gut kept telling me no. The last thing I want to be doing is trying to get her to pay me back.

That becomes management problem, not yours @cap.toon . Seriously, sounds like you did your best, now let it go is my advice. You can't be responsible for everything no matter how awful it makes you feel.

I once had a problem like that, and my manager forwarded me a check from petty cash and said to give him the money when my pay came in. ^.^ I used to get paid monthly so...I was very grateful to him. I couldn't have paid that loan off quickly enough either. ^.^ It weight on my mind. :sweating_profusely::sweating_profusely:
