Why are indecisive MCs Popular?

I have watched a lot of anime, read manga and light novels over the years and it has become quite annoying to have the same type of protagonist with similar background story setting as a main character. They have coward tendencies, lack common sense when it comes to female characters, have superior moral complex and a bland personality.

Why is this popular in JP and CH? I am not asking for anti hero MCs but at least make it interesting. It is the same template again and again when it comes to the protagonist and somehow it's a hit. Is it coz of different taste?

 

That how everyone believe they should act so it has slowly became the average male because they told us he was.

 

I think it might be because it's easier to insert yourself into the bland protagonist and it could kinda be as if you are protagonist enjoying the harem or something

 

indecisiveness is a plot excuse for a quasi harem situation

 

Rather than popular, it is more a lengthening of the plot as many stories would be short if the mc is decisive.

Because if the MCs are decisive, either the story would go way too fast to explain how things work or if they have personality, the story would get even more complicated due to the actions of the MC. As for the coward, its basically how a normal person would react to certain situations where they are clueless or without any influences from outside sources(i.e. Anime or other stuff).

A normal person could be more relatable than a psychopath or a sociopath that acts on his own without forming a destination.

 

It's easy to have an indecisive Protagonist mature.

 

It's not that it's popular. It's forcefed to the audience because the artists or companies want to milk the title until they can't milk it anymore. Then when people say, "Screw this shit!", the title will get axed and the artist will give half-ass crap ending. This is a common phenomenon when greedy people control the product instead of the creator being free to create as they please.

 

I don't think they're popular by their indecisiveness.. I would say a calm and calculative, but decisive Mc is way better..

well, I can't relate too much with that kind of troupe.. may be targetting romantically-challenged person and the likes of them as consumer give them better profits..

In the anime, he confessed and got into relationship with main heroine only in episode 4

The drama for the first 4 volumes revolves around how MC stay strong in defending their relationship iirc

 

Pretty sure most people here hate it, that's why people switch to CN novels. Then they get sick of pyschpath MC's and search for something of at least somewhat literal worth.

 

If it is indecisiveness with who the female lead will be, then I think the authors are doing that so all the ships of the readers won't be wrecked and many won't leave after their ship becomes impossible.

 

Is it? Just look at the really popular stories in both countries and you find MCs really decisive about stuff like Luffy, Naruto, etc, and the tradicional xianxia MC. The bland indecisive protagonist is only a somewhat established persona in harem isekai japanese stories and even then the more popular ones usually do have somewhat decisive protags who only appear to be indecisive from some perspectives, like in Death March, where the MC has no interest in the little girls and young teenagers throwing themselves at him because he's a thirty something year guy and has no interest in being a pedophile., but has no problem flirting and even having sex with older woman.

 

Q: Why is X trope popular?
A: Because you only read a single genre and expect to find different things in it.

Doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result is silly, if you want a breathe of fresh air, start reading different stuff.
