    Mafia #31: Monsters

    Flavor text:

Imagine that you are a god. Not the God, but a god. Not omniscient nor omnipotent, but still knowledgeable and mystically powerful to a certain extent.

Your existence is not unique. There are other gods as well. Each of them have their own powers, weaknesses, beliefs, worshipers, and so forth while maintaining their side of the universe, multiverse or whatever it is you want to call it.

Some of you are idiot goody two shoes who merely wanted to protect the weak from any intentional harm of the strong, but don't do their jobs properly. Some of us are filthy degenerates who spread their immoral behavior onto the minds and bodies of innocent creatures.

Some of you are the equally detestable social justice warriors who don't even bother listening to other gods while enforcing their laws and ideals onto literally every creature. Some of us don't want to have anything to do with each other because they know that joining a faction will only wear them out at the end of the day.

But if you were to ask me what all of us gods have in common, whether we are good or evil, beautiful or ugly, mortal or immortal, sane or insane, then I would definitely tell you:

    We are bored as hell.

You might have taken interest in some of your worshipers. Perhaps it is forbidden love. Perhaps it is war. Perhaps they built a great tower reaching out to the heavens, only to have it fall by the common law that is gravity.
But give or take two centuries and they will either die or have a stagnant, boring life repeating the same thing that you have seen a couple of centuries ago.

You then might want to grant your creatures miracles --things or events that should not have been possible to explain with science, logic and magic. A necessary spice for a delicious meal that is excitement.
But those aren't exactly easy to produce. Even the gods with the greatest faiths that I know of have limits of granting their worshipers three small miracles or one grand miracle every three millennia.

For a point of reference, reviving one mortal is a small miracle while a grand miracle is something akin of resetting the whole world to zero.

Somehow, we don't have a god that specializes in reviving the dead. Necromancy is a thing, but those don't exactly revive the dead as you want them to be. Most of us are hoping that something akin of a super duper world class level demon king or a god of lost souls will be born soon to fix this problem so we can have an easier way to pass our time. The god of reincarnation probably won't like it, but who cares about him anyways?

Incidentally, brainwashing a whole continent is roughly equivalent to two small miracles for most of us gods. Its effects always seem to revert to its original state no matter what after three to six generations and the brainwashed worshipers always lose in the end.
Asking the god of fate and the gods of chance why this failure keep happening is always useless as they either talk in cryptic words with multiple interpretations or they talk about irrelevant stories of the past.
Considering the long time it takes to regain our faith from the backlashes, continental-scale brainwashing really is a wasteful ability that only few gods would use to gain happiness before they die.

Given the fact that "godly weapons" are usually equivalent to one small miracle, granting these to mortals seem to be a wiser choice among the younger passionate gods since said items are basically indestructible strings attached to the puppets that are its wielders.

"In exchange for power, give us your soul." Something along those lines is popular among the chaotic faction nowadays.

Anyhow, back to the point: We were bored. One day and six millennia ago, someone asked us to host a death game where multiple worshiping monsters from multiple worlds are to fight to their death while everyone -gods and their creatures- watch the game unfold.

Without giving any thoughts, the majority of the chaotic faction did that immediately and... would you look at that? It did not end well. "Oh no~ Who could have predicted that~?"
Not only did it confuse their worshipers, but a large portion of their monsters even stopped believing in those gods. Having that said, perhaps it was because they were satisfied with the results, but the gods who had lost worshipers did not seem to mind their loss at all.

Three boring millennia had passed since them, and while the peaceful faction flourished in gaining faith by not participating in the death game, they had finally also grown tired of peace. It's not as if their world is a boring utopia where no war occur, but worlds where war occurred with intense emotions and radical beliefs, where nearly god-like conquering stratagems were deployed... could be counted with one human hand.

The chaotic factions had regained their faith and the gods of the peaceful faction had been at their wits' end. So, the second monster death game started.
With the power of the two factions, roughly 50 monster champions and 20,000 monster companions were transported into an uninhabited world and fought to their death.

To prevent the loss of faith like the first game, the peaceful gods had declared to give the all participating worlds a participation prize of one "godly weapon" to motivate their worshipers. To top it off, the champion of the winning world will be granted power by the gods to become one of their kin.

And thus, the Second Monster Death Game occurred.

Right off the bat, within the first weeks after the start of the game, over a dozen of monster champions and roughly 7,000 monster companions had already died due to the massive power difference. Even after two whole years, there were still over two dozen monster champions and 8,000 monster companions remaining. The fact that some monsters were safe for a small period of time are due to the fact that they primarily live deep underground, underwater, or even on a floating island that they had built.

The group of races that stood out the most were the ones that was not "alive" in the first place, and the ones that parasite off other monsters as their hosts. These types were so feared by the other monster champions that they actually formed a union to eradicate all non-living and parasitic creatures.

It was only after 16 years when the union fulfilled its task. In that time, the monster champions and their companions had become accustomed enough to the formerly desolated world, that they had practically become that world's official residents. By that time though, only six monster champions remained. They were all worn out, wounded, and some were not in the right mind for bloodshed anymore.

If you see the monster champions as tribe leaders leading over 50 tribes, then you might even say that this Death Game was the war that had founded six states. Naturally, prisoners of war became slaves who were used, abused and whatever other atrocities you might think of. Despite having lost the war, unable to return to their home-worlds for the rest of eternity and having the social status of the lowest, the loser monsters at were at least spared of their lives.

So... half a century had passed since the start of the war and somehow, instead of killing each other, the remaining six champions decided to abandon their former home-worlds and live in the new world instead? Well, some of us were fine with that since it was a nice experience overall, but the gods of the chaotic faction and the monster families from the monster champions' home-worlds were not particularly happy with the situation.

The peaceful faction tried to intervene, but an internal strife happened here and there, some gods from the peaceful faction went over to the chaotic faction and the other way around as well, and... ugh. It was a total chaos that almost led us to another Armageddon. In the end though, we managed to find one solution:

Order the Six Monster Champions to kill each other within 5 years, or we will nuke the whole world away.

Yeah, uh... not quite the most "peaceful" option, but everyone was fed up with this whole fiasco at the time that practically nobody objected. In the Playground World, the Six Monster Champions took a while to accept their fate, but they finally prepared to end it as well. They even made a whole Colosseum where they could fight to their death.

So... that happened. Three millennia ago, that is. We took barely a millennium to discuss about how the Second Monster Death Game went, and we firmly decided that in the Third Monster Death Game, we would not bring any companions at all. The influential drawbacks simply outweigh the numerical and tactical benefits in the end. Many gods decided to not participate in the 3rd MDG to resolve the internal mess that happened during the 2nd MDG and/or to save up faith for more miracles for the 4th MDG.

All this was fine and all... but then a small group of seven gods requested for the death game to not involve reckless murder. The response to that request was as you might expect; everyone was furious. Especially those from the new peaceful faction were outraged, because over half of the Small Group were from their faction.

The gods of the Small Group then further explained that, since we will summon less than 25 monster champions anyway, we might as well make the Death Game a Mafia Game instead. It took the gods of the Small Group a couple hours to explain how the game works, and surprisingly less than quarter of a dozen gods complained! The new peaceful faction were satisfied that the following deaths would not be as brutal as before, and the new chaotic faction were interested in the betrayals of the champions who are going to be forced to play together.

The only ones who were dissatisfied with the game were gods stingy with their faith such as the god of greed. Seeing that "everyone" agreed on the matter, us gods then took our monster champions once more after three long millennia and placed them on another desolate world. This time, the world is far smaller than the previous one. Its land surface area is just enough to be called a town, while the rest of the world is covered with water.

With such a setup, surely they won't be able to rebel like they did in the 2nd MDG. We even carefully removed the parasitic monsters and the aquatic monsters after all.

Anyhow, you might now finally ask: "Hey. This is all an imagination, right? What do I have got to do with this story?" Well you see... you will be participating this game as our monster champions. To further ensure that there will be no rebellion, we decided that fresh new souls from other vacant worlds should be used for the 3rd MDG. So: Good luck, you all!

    General Rules:
    Golden Rules:
Do your best to not be inactive.
Remember what your goals are at all times.
Don't panic if you commit a mistake, but try to work your way around it.

    Basic Stuff:
    Terminology:
    General terms:
    Hard Claim:
Directly stating one's own role on the game thread.
Soft Claim: Hinting one's role without explicitly stating it. For instance, saying "there are a lot of people that are more important than me" may imply that you are soft-claiming citizen. Make sure you have a plan in mind before attempting this.
Scum/Scummy: Scum is the name given to any role which doesn't win with town, and needs to be eliminated for town's win condition (like, mafia or any sort of neutral). Being scummy means adopting a behavior which doesn't line up with the behavior expected from a town member.
Reads/Reading: The read you have on a player is the conclusion about their alignment and/or role through their posts or other factors. If player X posts things that look like they’re a mafia member, you have a scum-read on them!
Mis-lynch: An incorrect lynch on a town member.
Tunneling: Solely focusing on a player and their posts, ignoring others. Often considered scummy.
Game Throwing: Playing against your win condition with the intent of making your own faction lose.
    Slightly more uncommon terms:
    LyLo -
Lynch or Lose. A stage in the game where town must lynch scum or they lose.
    PoE - Process of Elimination.
OMGUS - "oh my god you suck". (Usually used when voting back someone who is voting you.)
ISO - Isolation. Looking at a player's total posts in a game, in succession.

    Playing as town:
While Mafia can talk strategy during the night, the town needs to use the day phase to discuss and figure out who is and isn't town as well. What can you do, then?
Try to look for posts that feel scummy, ask and answer questions other players have made, try to see which intentions a player has behind their posts, be active and post what you think of other players regularly. Avoid plays which could benefit scum instead (e.g Hard-claiming for no reason, fake-claiming), and try your best to think for yourself - it's a common mistake to follow blindly whatever other players have to say.
Townies have no reason to lie and should never do it. Spotting a lie can be almost as sure as spotting a mafia itself.
Link to a citizen guide made by ObiWan on the ToS forums.

    Playing as mafia:
As scum, you should play exactly like you would as town - be active, post reads, try to look productive, etc. The difference here are your goals: Hiding information, misleading the town and stalling out long enough until they no longer outnumber you. This means appearing as scum-hunting, but in actuality pushing for a mislynch by questioning, false reading and trying to depict a player as scum. However, keep in mind that if a teammate is acting undeniably scummy and their lynch looks like the right call, try not to oppose it too obviously - or it could be tracked back to you.
And remember: you are a team, and thus communication is essential. Try to talk over every situation so you can plan in advance.

    -----------------------------------------------

    List of the general roles:
    You are a Citizen.

You don't have any special ability and just try to live your life in peace. Each day you get to vote in an attempt to remove the Mafia from the community.

    You win with the Town
    You must kill the Mafia
    You are an Alignment Cop.

Every night you have the ability to investigate one town member to see if they're up to anything suspicious. If your target is a member of the Mafia, you will know. However, the Godfather hides their tracks too well and will appear as not suspicious to you.

    You win with the Town
    You must kill the Mafia
    You are a Doctor.

You have the ability to visit one person each night. If they are attacked that night, you arrive just in time to save their life. You do not receive feedback regardless if your target was attacked or not. Whether you can heal yourself is up to the GM, but commonly you either have very limited self-heals or you simply cannot heal yourself.

    You win with the Town
    You must kill the Mafia
You are a Paranoid Gun Owner.

Going on alert makes you kill anybody who comes to your house that night, both evil and good, so use this power carefully or you will do more harm than good. This can also kill people who are normally night immune, like the Godfather.
You are immune to attacks, and any other harmful night actions while on alert. Watch out for the strongman though, as he can bypass your night abilities.
You can go on alert limited times throughout the game (dependent on GM) and you are immune to being roleblocked.

    You win with the Town
    You must kill the Mafia
    You are a Roleblocker.

Each night you can choose one player to visit. You will spend the night with your target, who will be too busy to use their role that night, effectively roleblocking them. Your target will be informed that they were roleblocked.
However, if the person you visit turns out to be a Paranoid Gun owner and he’s on alert, you’ll die.
You are immune to being roleblocked.

    You win with the Town
    You must kill the Mafia
    You are a Tracker.

Every night you may target a player and see who they visited, if anyone at all.

    You win with the Town
    You must kill the Mafia
    You are a Trauma Patient.

At night you may choose to remember any non-killing Town role of the townies that died.
You will assume this role the next night.

    You win with the Town
    You must kill the Mafia
    You are a 2-Shot Vigilante.

Each night you may decide to shoot and kill one player whom you believe to be evil.
You only have 2 bullets, allowing you to perform your night action up to 2 times.

    You win with the Town
    You must kill the Mafia
    You are a Watcher.

Every night you may target a player and see by whom they were visited, if anyone at all.

    You win with the Town
    You must kill the Mafia
    You are the Godfather.

You are immune from being killed at night.
If you are investigated by a Cop, you will appear to be "Not Suspicious".
You can communicate with your allies for as long as they are alive.
Your teammate is [X], the [role]. You do not know who the traitor is.

    You win with the Mafia
    You must kill the Town
    You are a Roleblocker.

Your target will be informed that they were roleblocked.
However, if the person you visit turns out to be a Paranoid Gun owner and he’s on alert, you’ll die.
You are immune to being roleblocked.

You win with when all threats to the town have been eliminated with at least 1 town member remaining.

    General setup info
    • Most of the roles will be either modified or completely new, but some of them might be based on the general ones. (For example: A role which can track and watch a target, or a non-night immune godfather with 1-shot strongman.)
    • The abilities may or may not be X-shot, have restrictions, or be modified in any way I can think of.
    • There should be no overpowered roles in the game.
    • Lynching or killing a player will result in them being removed from the game with their role card being revealed to the public.
    • There are at least two factions within the game: Town and Mafia.
    • The mafia can perform the night kill and use their abilities at the same time.
    • There is a Mafia PM. Mafia are not allowed to talk in the Mafia PM during Day Phase.
    • Whether as Town or Mafia, asking for Fake Claims is allowed. Therefore, be warned about anything anyone claims to be. Please consult more about Fake Claims in your Role PM.

    Important setup info
    • This is not a bastard game.
    • With the exception of one role, this is a closed setup.
    • Cause of death will not be announced, nor informed to the players.
    • There will be no alignment changes mid-game.
    Mechanics and Game Details:
    Cycle:
48 hours Day Phase and 24 hours Night Phase

The game starts at Sunday September 8th, 3 PM EST

    Lynch:
-> Plurality: the person with the highest number of votes at the end of the day gets lynched.
-> Majority: If at any point of the game the majority of the players vote on one person, the day will end immediately and that person will be lynched.
-> In case of a tie, there will be no lynch.

    How to vote:
Either write /vote [player name], or post the whole Vote Count by yourself. Bolding the vote isn’t necessary, but it would make it easier for me if you did it.
Votes inside quotes or spoilers do not count.

It is optional for players to post their own Vote Count, but Official Public Vote Counts are present and will be updated every possible 12 hours.

    Posting requirements:
-> At least 5 posts every Day Phase.
-> If a person doesn’t meet the required amount within the first 24 hours of the day, they will be prodded (i.e. tagged by the hosts, asking whether they can still play the game).
-> If a player doesn’t respond within 12 hours after the first prod or gets prodded thrice, they’ll be either substituted or modkilled.

    Additional notes:
-> The flavor texts will only be presented on this post and maybe at the end of the game.
-> @A5G_Reaper will be co-hosting this game. In case I am unavailable, Rea-cchi will have the authority of everything.
-> Once again, thank you Rotte for making the foundation of this opening post.
