i learn something new everyday I really just thought they did it on their own and wrote whatever came to mind because of deadlines and the combined power of coffee, energy drink, and the fear of being poor

Plagiarism is legal as long as you copy less than 1500 characters in China. It's easy to just copy 4000 other books to pad your chapter count.
Besides, it's cultural and button ghostwriters isn't rocket science.
If authors can pay readers to buy their chapters then hiring ghostwriters should be much easier.

    Cheers!

There are many techniques used by pro writters to add empty content to their novels, not just chinese ones. You blame the writters because the plagiarism, but probably you should blame the editors (and censors). There is one aditional layer on chinese novels, the censorship. Never forget about it. You can't freely choose what do you want to writte about in China, it's way more easy copy others to be into the safe zone.

But all of them are just smalls fishes compared with Corin Tellado and her +4000 novels (not just chapters, full novels)

They do it because they earn $$$ from it. It's a lot easier to motivate yourself when $$$ is involved...

Yeah, because that's where the platform incentives are if you're at all serious about making money from it. The snide answer that doesn't go into details is "that's what you get with 2-4 chapters every day over a few years".

Payouts on webnovel platforms tend to go on a word count-per-chapter model, with virtual currencies being exchanged at certain word count breakpoints. Let's say you're capable of turning your brain off and putting out about 6214 words today, and the platform breakpoint is every 300 words for each "token", let's call it. You could release a single chapter and it'd charge readers 21 tokens. Or you could split it up, let's say among four chapters: 1504, 1614, 1553, 1543. Each of those chapters is 6 tokens, 6x4=24 tokens for the day for the same word count (obviously in reality they'd each get padded a teensy bit more for transition, but play along, will you?). That's 3 more tokens per reader per day you're milking out, and that adds up. (Note: this isn't the precise formula in play, but I can't be bothered to look it up; just know that the breakpoints may be a bit different but the same effect occurs.)

That's not to mention other incentives with a novel's visibility and accessibility. Four chapters are four times you show up on whatever New Chapter Releases list there is, instead of just once. Additionally, it should be kept in mind that a primary demographic for webnovel reading on the male side is commuters going to and from their jobs. You don't want chapters to be too long or they'll defer reading, potentially indefinitely, because they need to pay attention and need the natural breakpoints of their chapters. Having staggered release also means they continue the slow drip on both ends of their travel for the day.

(The female side of the house has even weirder stuff going on with chapter sizes, as some may notice, but I will defer commentary as to the why to others. Needless to say, most female-focused novels have even shorter chapters.)

Now, why are all these chapters getting piled up in a single work instead of having the effort put into multiples? Because on a webnovel platform, all the metrics for visibility and popularity snowball. If you're in this for the money and your name isn't Tang Jia San Shao, your best bet is to milk a cash cow until the udders are dry and then keep going even though it's blood coming out now (gross). If you finish the novel and move on, you have some name recognition as an author but your new novel has to start on the key metrics from scratch, and if you split effort among multiple simultaneous novels you dilute the effects of focusing and promoting one.

People respond to incentives, perverse as they may be. Keep that in mind as you go through life.

Pretty much just spend stupid amounts of time describing things and write tons of filler

Or ascend and become one of the few godly people who can write thousands of chapters where every single chapter is good

You see, they are able to write thousands of chapters because they have mastered the art of creating filler. Rehashing the same idea but with a bit of a different texture. That, and they have ascended when it comes to typing.

Well, if each chapter is really short, then they could maybe write several a day before submitting it to the site!

Because they write generic trash with fillers and redundant information. It's just rinse and repeat with higher power levels, more jade beauties and same cardboard one dimensional personalities. It's nothing to admire, more like despise.

lol even if everyone was polite we pretty much spit all over OP and his likes

People have to learn that in the entire education system. I hated it, when you had to write an essay or something but it had to be of certain size while the topic could be explained in one page. It's just the skill of bullshiting and when someone is doing a presentation but hasn't actually said anything in 5min I just wanna tear my hair out, or theirs...
