Discussion How many beautiful girls can there be???

I feel like every girl that's introduced in a novel is "a goddess on earth" "a fairy" "smooth and pale skin" that last one just makes no sense lol pale, really? Why are authors so hell bent on making every female side character gorgeous, it usually signals the start of a harem when every female character the mc meets is "covered by a veil but could tell she's beautiful". Like it becomes really hard to imagine the females looking different when they're all devastatingly beautiful and they all have a perfect body.

 

In Asia, having fair skin (or how some people describe it, pale) is preferable trait. Fair skin is often considered one of the characteristics of a beautiful person. That's why there are songs made that say dark skin can be pretty too. While one can argue that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, in Asia at least, pale/fair is the universal standard of beauty. That's why whitening creams sell like hotcakes.

Since you're reading a Chinese novel, the author and readers would follow the universal standard of beauty among Asians. I know that Americans prefer tanned women. But in Asia, we don't like having tanned skin. We want pale skin, that's why we buy skincare products that make our skin fairer.

There’s the exact same problem for guys too. All guys in Chinese novels (at least the ones I read) are gorgeous. Kind of makes no one stand out if they’re all the most handsomest men in existence.

 

Cuz if the MC is (eventually) gotta catch 'em all, why not go the whole way and make them all legendaries?

 

This tend to make the women in the story become so cheap later on as the beauty chart just go beyond uncontrollable and MC just chase them all like fuckin pokemons

Because the novel is the author's wish fulfilment. Ffs why you would spoil your own dreams by putting up with average/ below-average as capture targets? There are some novels that just outright ban average and less-thans even as backgrounds. If you want to see the average you might as well stop reading and go visit your local Walmart, or whatever supermarket your country operates.
