It's a smile that occurs when every single thing you cherish that's left was no more, that you have nothing more to lose whatever happens.
When people get so angry that they smile/laugh yelling "Good!" thrice, then they lose it and start killing/exterminating shit. Applicable for CN novels. Found with your typical elder level characters/sect masters/ antagonists, when MC destroys everything that they had built or utterly foiled their plans.
Lemme do this as if I'm making a paper on class. The eyes are the window to the soul. In a person's expression we usually determine their state of being through their faces and most of our expressions revolves around the shape of the faces. The shape in the image normally invokes happiness but just like my earlier statement, the eyes are the window. Your Id - the soul, slowly taking over. That smile is a defiance to reality, that although you're not happy, you want to be, the super ego standing defiant over the Id that's slowly taking over. Then, you go absolutely fucking crazy, the end.
That is someone incredibly sad at their situation to the point that they can't help laughing at the incredibility of it. They are feeling that it is so ridiculous that something like that has happened to them that it twists and becomes funny. So the expression turns into that because they are experiencing both emotions at once. Haven't you ever had that happen to you? Where someone betrays you, or circumstances just screwed you over, and you can't help thinking the whole thing is just so stupid you almost can't believe it is real and so start to laugh, but are still angry or upset at the same time? I think that expression there is a more intense version of that, but with just sadness and hopelessness. I'll come back and post another expression for people to analyze when I find a good one.
