How often do you come across a story/novel that has names that you recognize and how do you react to it, for example, what if the story is based on a romance novel and the heroine's name has your sister or grandmother's name do you just avoid it or read it since, when I read my brain auto-monologue or an imagines a scenario however the female face gets replaced by a face your very familiar with the one your most used to call it with. Since I read a lot of Erotic novels I mostly see common names mostly my classmate's name that it feels very wrong to read something that has a similar name that associate it with for example what if a character was a stripper and a classmate with a similar name, for my reaction I just feel creeped out by the fact, anyway how do you guys react to it?
I'm thrilled to see characters named after friends and acquaintances. Sometimes I even take screenshots to share. There's a nice "@Tony doesn't talk to us anymore." line in an episode of Criminal Minds~
I ignore it. For some reasons my brain just doesn't seem to give a fk & just literally ignores it most of the time, even if it's a similar name to mine. Unless there's a scene that has caught my full attention or amused me, then that's the only time where I'll send a picture to my best friends.
That may sound disgusting... But when I read a pornographic novel with the heroine's name the same as my secret love, I felt very excited… It's been many years, but I remember clearly how excited I was at that time...
I don't encounter names of people in my life that much since I started reading CH, KR, JP webnovels more than the traditionally published English ones but the ones I usually do are of people I dislike. There's this one novel where I rolled my eyes out a lot whenever I read the MC's name which was similar to someone I'm... at odds with-- not a good experience hate-reading the whole thing just because of the MC's name. It was only once when I saw a friend's name in a particularly steamy smut novel and yes it felt so wrong to read.
Apparently, I'm good at compartmentalizing real life people and story characters. The similarity in names doesn't affect my reading experience. But when I do see the name for the first time, it would remind me of that person from real life.
Hahaha, same and the next time I sleep I'll probably be dreaming about my crush <3. It's hard to enjoy a good novel especially when you have an antagonist named after someone you basically hated your whole life. There was one time I basically screamed at an antagonist in the story that reminds me of a situation that similary happened in real life that made me just drop the story even though I'm halfway done. True especially when the protagonist is a mass murderer that was named after me :/. Lucky you
