Since I didn’t like Song of Ice and Fire, yes.

Kind of weird you didn’t pick some highly rated edited Chinese Novel to compare it to though.

Can you even name any CN that are close to being as engrossing? Most of them tend to outrun their plot after chapter 1000

I doubt the sub-standard CN/KR popcorn I consume on a daily basis can compare to almost any decent, properly edited and professionally published English novel regardless. The themes themselves are a problem, too, due to me only being passingly familiar with Oriental culture due to the dedicated auti- I mean efforts of beautiful translator/editors and their notes. So I'm likely missing a giant chunk of awareness about the cultural and historical themes, and that missing chunk makes it practically impossible for me to judge a book on its actual merit. So I honestly just lack the knowledge and skills to adequately judge! Not even mentioning all the wordplay and literacy wizardry that gets lost in translation.

As it stands, I'm not really that excited when someone mentions something from the however many kindgoms era or whatever with lubu and all the other shite I never remember, but if you mention something similar to King Arthur I get that little recognition tingle. I can pretty honestly state I haven't read any of the Chinese classics and I have no real interest in them, so to me, western fantasy will always be preferable.

Well, people tend to say ASOIAF is lower and darker version of LOTR so...

I am curious about one thing, it seems clear you guys dislike unedited web novels then why not just stick to professional edited published English novels? I doubt you will ever run out of them even if you read those whole lives.

It seems really weird when people on this forum keep dissing unedited web novels while praising published novels when this website is mainly filled with former.

I doubt that these people read SOIAF or LOTR or else they wouldn't say such stupid things.

Because this site deals with fan translations so of course a majority of the translators are amateurs and in most cases unedited
Those that are edited and professionally translated are available in amazon or sites like it

Yes, but that avoids the point, why aren’t they reading on Amazon Prime instead of stuff on here that they consider trash makes and them mad?

So is the library and the hundreds of gigs of novel torrents. You could never read a fraction of either.

It depends on what aspect you're trying to compare. If you're talking about it in the sense of a massive sprawling plot with tons of character POVs and a million things going on at the same time, I don't think that Chinese novels are interested in telling this kind of story. Even stories with similar levels of complexity tend to try to make things more manageable for the reader. If you're talking about the political intrigue, well political intrigue is the bread and butter of the entire Chinese historical genre so there are a ton of books that do it way better than in ASOIAF.

If it's about the quality of the prose, I think that GRRM has improved a lot in this aspect of his writing but there are a ton of Chinese writers who can construct more elegant writing. To be fair, this is tipped against GRRM since I think that it's a lot more work to put together elegant writing in English whereas this is something that the Chinese language lends itself to. If it's all about overall quality, the last couple of books in ASOIAF were sort of crap so it's again not going to be hard to find a ton of Chinese novels that are better.

Sorry, but I have no idea what it is by the acronym. What's the name of the series?

Also, wasn't the 3 Body Problem highly respected by the scifi community? There's that.
