This scenario is written in honor of BL and yuri

It is the final chapter of an epic novel series spanning over half a million words, and humanity has fallen to its lowest point.

Specifically, there are only two humans left on the planet:

You and your best friend (same gender)​

If you don’t want humanity to go extinct, one of you will need to drink a potion that will magically cause you to change gender so you can have babies.

Which one of you will drink it? Or would you screw humanity and let everything end?

Note: Assume for the sake of this prompt that no other human genetic material or reproductive strategies are left on the planet.​

1. Would you change your gender to save humanity?

2. Would you reproduce with your best friend even if you didn’t love them in a romantic/sexual fashion?

3. If it was possible to make a test tube baby by rearranging and mixing the chromosomes between you and your friend, would you do it?

4. Could you raise a child (be a parent) with your best friend? Which one of you would take greater responsibility, or equal?

I think this would be my one time to do paper in rock paper scissors. (I always do scissors and everyone around me knows it).

Sure, don't have anything else to do probably. Unless an almighty being tells me not to then I'd likely go for it. There's nothing else left after all.

Sure, that sounds cool.

Depends on the friend really... And on who stayed male. I think I know vaguely how to raise a child from watching my adorable niece grow up a bit, but really it would mostly rely on who is the mother. If I were the mother, it would be fair to rest a bit and just focus on feeding the baby for a bit. Whoever the father is would half to do all the manual labour in terms of sustaining a livable environment (finding food, building shelters, fighting whatever the apocalypse has in store). Really my ideal would be to mirror my ideal family structure.

Right! You would absolutely need technology to reintroduce diversity into the human population. It would definitely be a bottleneck event at the minimum.

It’s the kind of odd scenario where you would want to induce mutagenesis.

If the internet is still available, you could use DNA sequences from the thousand genomes project as a reference.

Maybe? I’m not sure there would be enough genetic diversity that it would be a good idea. Bringing back humanity might not be a good idea. But if we decided to take the potion, I would prefer to be the one to take it.

If we both decided that was a good idea.

You know, I think about those breeding programs in zoos where there are literally the last ones of the species.

I think the general idea is that even if there’s only two, hopefully if you breed them for now hopefully in the future technology will advance enough to either preserve the data of their species entirely or reintroduce enough genetic diversity that their survival as a species is stable.
