    Some playing cards were selected to randomly pass out to people. If you had a black card, you were on one team, if you were red, you were on the other team. There were different roles depending on the face card you got, but if it was a number card, you were a citizen.

    That's just needlessly complicating things... Just have the game master call the role out and tap people on the shoulder if they have said role...

    Yup. That’s how I always played it. And unlike what I can tell from the first page, there was usually only ever one mafia, sometimes two. Reading the first few pages of this thread is just making me confused. I’m going to try coming up here and read backwards, see if that helps.

    Because it's in forum we can get away with more complicated roles than verbal play. Imagine GMing a rl mafia game with 20 players, how long would it take just for the GM to get everything through? Not to mention that people would have hard time recalling what happened on the early phases.

    1 mafia for every 3 town members of which 1 of those 3 town members have a power role is the basic formula I believe we use here. Then there are many insane formulas that have been added over time.
