Discussion Worst turn off in a novel?

To be honest, I only made this thread to complain about the most annoying thing in any and all novels. Specifically chinese novels. When ranting about chinese novels, I see people get annoyed when the writers start to rant on about chinese supremacy. Tbh, it is annoying, but not as annoying as when they keep saying, I your father, or, I your brother, or I your uncle or, well you get it. It really grinds my gear when authors / tl does that, like chill the fuck out you pervert, just call yourself normally ffs.
Anyways, what’s the biggest turn-off for you when reading a novel?

 

Women with rights.

 

Worst turn-off for me is the cliche where a guy gets "poisoned" with an aphrodisiac and the cold beauty near him "saves his life" by having s*x and they become a couple.

Overused by authors who can't write romance for sh*t.

 

brain dead villains that seem vindictive for no real reason.

Like ik you need an enemy in your story just to prove your mc is an angel, but wtf. im sure if the poor villain had a choice they wouldn't choose to embarrass themselves this way just to be steppin stones.

 

I don’t have anything against the “I, your father” and such lines in CN novels.. I do greatly dislike the overboard Chinese ‘nationalism’ found in some novels but what irks me the most is when the author introduces a character and their personality or characteristics in a certain way and then changes them halfway through the story or even before then. It feels like the author changed his mind in the middle and adds stuff out of no where, literally. I get that most webnovel authors aren't professional writers but come on.. unless a person has multiple personalities or suffers from schizophrenia, bi-polar disorder or similar mental illnesses then they shouldn’t have some abnormal (usually contradictory) aspect introduced ages into the story, especially when that aspect doesn’t fit well with the image the author conveys in their earlier description of said character.

 

Men who think that others can’t have rights.

 

This scenario: (Female antagonist)
-Ugly bitch is engaged to my love interest? I kinda want to fuck her over while flirting with him as he loves me.
-She became beautiful! No! She’s still a bitch so my love interest won’t fall for her!
-He fell for her! And so did every good looking guy in the country!
-Why am I being punished? I did nothing wrong!!!

Or any variation of that really. Because a female antagonist is essentially aggressive cardboard in Chinese novels

 

characters that seem like Cardboard no real emotions no nothing feels like the world only exists around the mc and nothing changes elsewhere everything happens where the mc goes.
also villain's elder/father/master that has no problem eliminating an entire clan because of his assholish son/disciple

 

i quite like the "i, your (insert relation)" stuff because sometimes it's the funniest thing in a novel.

overused rape, cardboard characters, overblown offense (the "you looked at the air near me, you're now a mortal enemy and i must kill you. If i fail, my clan/sect/master/etc will avenge me") and filler flood for word and chapter count

 

When a fleshed out, important to arc, and a bit interesting side character suddenly disappears from the story and/or is completely forgotten.

mc being called trash 500 times in a chapter
mc that hides his identity/power for 700+ chapters

True, what annoys me is when it is used in an actual novel instead of those trash novels you read when there’s nothing better to read. If its in fanfics or trash novels, i don’t really mind since i know its going to be bad. But yeah, definitely overused and a bad sign of the romance in a novel if the author uses this cliche:

 

Genius MCs but mc can only be as genius as his author.

 

And what’s more annoying is when it happens immediately. “You dare refuse to give me your woman? Well this father will teach you a lesson” Or “How dare you stop my evil plan, this grandfather will teach you your place” Or “You hurt our young master even though he tried to take your woman and attack you first without even assesing the situation or whether knowing if you’re actually powerful or not, us Uncles will teach you a lesson”

 

Tbh i don’t really blame the author on this one. True it gets annoying but you have to admit they won’t know the best possible route to a problem every time. Though when its so obvious that there is a way and the author keeps limiting the mc’s use of his brain time and time again, it does get annoying.
What I will say is more annoying is when the mc was smart at the start of the novel but after gaining power and women, he suddenly turns brain-dead and just faces every problem with his power
