Consider an alternate Pokemon universe that exists in @lychee’s head.

In this Pokemon universe, there are no dumb animals — all animals are Pokemon — and Pokemon are generally quite intelligent.

Since all animals are Pokemon, this means that all milk in the supermarket comes from Miltank (a cow Pokemon).

Similarly, if you wanted to eat beef it would come from a Taurus, pork would come from Tepig, and fish would come from Magicarp. For the sake of argument — assume that they taste exactly the same as the related Earth animal.

Since the human demand for meat and other animal products is enormous, lots of Pokemon are bred in captivity in very cramped and inhumane conditions.

Knowing this, would you become vegetarian or vegan?

    1. Could you ever give up eating meat or animal products? Why or why not?

    2. Would you support a law for better living conditions for farm animals if it meant that your groceries would get more expensive?

    3. If animals really were sentient (or equivalently sentient as humans), would you eat them still?

Well, in such a universe, assuming that I would have grown up there... I don't think I would have much of a problem depending on the type of family I'm raised in.

Since in such a scenario, it would be the norm (provided my family was the kind to eat such food items), and thus I wouldn't really think much about it ethics of it for a while...

Of course, the opposite holds true I guess...

Hmmm... This is becoming kinda like a Nature VS Nurture question now tsk

    1. Even animal IRL have their own way of thinking. I consider that while eating 250 grams of medium rare beef steak, so no problem here.
    2. What do you consider as "better living condition" here? Luxurious 5-star hotel VIP room? Even now i have doubt against those wagyu meat which the cow get a massage and everything. What they need is mostly huge living area(fields) and sufficient food.
3... This one is quite a dilemma. But as long as there are meat-eating culture there, i guess it's okay

Eating Pokemon is fairly common, like the fruits that grow on Snover or Tropius. Chansey eggs are also said to be a delicacy that brings happiness.

There are a couple of Sinnoh Myths about people eating Pokemon as well. So I don't think too much would change.

    1. Could you ever give up eating meat or animal products? Why or why not?
No. I eat meat knowing full well that it is the flesh of animals. Nothing would change. I'd still eat the flesh of those tasty animals.
Meat contains essential nutrients not found in plants that the human body requires. It would be bad for my health to go full vegan.

    2. Would you support a law for better living conditions for farm animals if it meant that your groceries would get more expensive?
No. I care about the quality of the meat, not how it was raised. If better living conditions would significantly improve the quality of the meat, I may support it. Otherwise, I'd rather keep costs down.
    3. If animals really were sentient (or equivalently sentient as humans), would you eat them still?
Yes. All they need to do is raise livestock the way they raise people in communist countries. The livestock will be brought up to believe that their purpose in life is to become tasty food for humans and doing so is the highest honor. They will be proud to be eaten and happily grow strong for that purpose. They will celebrate they day they are chosen to be slaughtered.

I wouldnt. I like meat, and I'm selfish enough to know that you cant have meat without something suffering, or at least dying. I dont see how the intelligence of this something should make a difference, they feel pain and other things the same way regardless.
Yeah. Just because I want something that can be achieved only through death and suffering doesnt mean that thats all they should have.
Also, I'm quite sure a happy steak tastes better than a sad one. Even if its only the mental component.

Probably? I wouldnt explicitly go out to hunt them on my own if society had developped in a way that eating them wasnt acceptable, but I dont think I'd say no if it were readily available.
Or, a world where you hunt your own food. Be it because of low tech level or a societal norm or whatever
