I've been watching The Good Place and I recognized Derek from Brocklyn Nine Nine. Again he got a role acting as a crazy, seems it's gonna stick with him. What's he gonna do, act crazy guys for the rest of his life? Is he fine with that? Will people IRL take him seriously? Shouldn't acting be about being able to become anyone, not just one trick pony. I'm also thinking of the black guy from Rogue One, the one who gets the defected shuttle pilot brain tentacled. He's always acting psycho roles, because of his droppy eyelid? Some others who always act the same role : Adam Sandler, Leslie Nielsen, Vin Diesel, The Rock, Hugh Grant, Michael Cera, Zach Galifianakis, Sean Bean, Seth Rogen, Owen Wilson, Steve Carell
The bigger question is whether being a one trick pony limits your pay/prospects, leads to shortage of good roles or makes u feel stale to viewers? If not, I see no problem.
When people see someone and they associate them with a role, they might imagine them in similar roles and thus they get cycled into similar roles and such roles are then associated with them. Just look at your typical JP protagonist. They are drafted into the same role for most isekais Typical CN protagonist? Many faceslaps and Mount Tais KR protagonist? Need to farm that money and my way of getting stronger drains money. Some people might feel more natural in those roles as well. If you have the face of a villain there is no need to try hard to be a hero just have fun being a villain. If you noticed alot of goons have a similar look. Because that is what people are used to and expect to see.
I mean, unless they're very big, directors will cast the ones they are known for, the role your playing is a form of making your own brand after all. Unless you've been in theater since childhood and playing diverse roles, I imagine that its hard to break from something you're used to and confident in.
It's not a problem of diversity, per se. It's that, presumably, both in the past and today there have probably been actors who have done badly when they did roles outside of what they're very good at. You can have good all-round actors but you can also have actors who are practically specialized at certain character archetypes. Also, rather than risking your career and paycheck on doing something far outside your comfort zone i think many actors would rather take roles that they could do easily and enjoy it. Partly it's probably also a money thing. If you're doing action movies, you'd generally take the safe bet and go for an acknowledged action star like Vin Diesel, the Rock or Jason Statham. You probably wouldnt pick an actor best known for soppy romance or dramas.
I dunno, I'd probably watch Rowan Atkinson starring in Fight Club or Mad Max Thunderdome. Ooh, or Rowan Atkinson as John Rambo.
Other type cast actors include: https://www.cannonballagency.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/national-controlEnthusiast-ad-1.jpg Who I will forever remember as the Man in Black that didn't make the grade. https://i.pinimg.com/originals/7d/4f/e1/7d4fe106fb12271efdd01e47d89c43fe.jpg Seedy police detective.
the good actors are people who can take on many different roles, the average/bad ones just take on one role all the time (and probably don't even have to change much to fit the role). The pay, unfortunately, seems to be better for the average ones with the exact looks and personality that someone needs in their movie. this doesn't take into account, that many just don't get big roles repeatedly in different roles, so some good actors might have only been exposed as one-role-actors
I swear to God that Steven Seagal wore the same clothes in three different movies (Same black shirt and trousers). Terrible actor but the films weren’t bad to watch.
we can't know his private thoughts, but since it pays well, and people are entertained, I think most people in his situation would be fine with that it's a serious problem with recognizable actors: a guy who acted as one of draco malfoy's underlings actually had kids go up to him and say 'why are you so mean to harry' all rounder sounds good, but highly-skilled specialists are more effective in most fields: acting included. Also, most movie viewers watch movies for entertainment, not artistic merit so as entertainment and show-biz (for making money), specialist actors are often good enough.
