    He left the North and was heading back home. He passed through a town with a weird tax system, since the central government was infringing on their rights with a state of emergency that has been going on for over a decade

    Is it the desert? If what you talked about is after the desert (sellswords) part, it's probably 500+ which I haven't read it yet.

    I believe he just left the desert and is being escorted back to the capital

    It takes almost 100 chapters for things to happen.
    The novel has multiple point of views and not just the protagonist.
    It makes it slow paced.
    I will recommend Green Skin instead or Reverend Insanity

    I will recommend to give this novel definitely a go. It good novel with good story and politics intrigue. Though storylime may be little slow but novels pace is not slow.
    For multiple points of view they are not frequent but thwy brought new knowledge and prospective to story and they increase depth of novle and characters.

    It is long novel with each chapter is equivalent for 3 chapters of other novel. So week may not be suffice rather try this after exams.
