You know y’all can just filter it out, right.

Novel Updates > Tools > Release Filtering > Genre (Exclude)

It’s interesting how Yaoi seems to be so popular with Asian girls. Two of some of the most popular Chinese dramas are gay-themed. First it was that ‘Addicted/Heroin’ series (which got banned by China). And now, it’s ‘The Untamed’ (which excluded all gay scenes from the novels).

The (straight) romance stories on NU often has stolen/rehashed, un-original storylines. Straight up plagiarized. Two of the most popular are—
    • Modern girl (often a genius doctor or assassin) transmigrates into body of some weak, cowardly rich Miss who is bullied by her stepmothers and half-sisters. She gets revenge and attracts the attention of some prince blahblahblah
    • Some empress is betrayed by her husband who has been hooking up with another woman. She dies and goes back in time to get revenge, attracting the attention of some prince blahblahblah
I swear to god, seemingly 90% of romance novels on here follow the same plotlines. I made a list but I can’t keep track any more.

Of course, Yaoi novels also have their cliche & trope problems (World Hopping, Quick Transmigration).

Sometimes, there’s so much trash that you gotta branch out a little, y’know ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Yaoi is often written by straight girls for other straight girls to read. Their portrayals of gay men in gay relationships aren’t always accurate. A lot of ‘authors’ on NU writes as a hobby, so we’re not really expecting professional quality, masterpiece-level writing here.

Honestly I felt like I was drowning in unwanted content I had no interest in until I found this feature, so I do still harbor negative emotions towards certain tags/genres.

I see no different really. Just male characters with female persona. Like the authors don’t have clue how they should act. I wonder why...?

You can just filter it out. Why complain about everything that's not made to appeal to you.

No, I think those bl novels focus way to much on convincing people that the romance is "beautiful" and the plot is incidental. I'd prefer to have the plot be the focus and the romance be incidental.

I think this video "Office Homophobe" from Key and Peele is relevant here.

Or rather girls hate other girls.
They want to see only flower boys
Having a female character even as a love interest incites jealousy.
    Thanks to decades of conditioning.
The gender that hates women the most is other women

Yeah, I do notice a lot of sexist/misogynistic undertones in Asian romance novels (gay/straight whatever).

Besides the MC, there are rarely any other ‘good’ female characters. Female love rivals are always two-faced, bitchy schemers. However, male love rivals can all be good, decent men. But when two women fight over a dude, it’s always ugly. (Why does it have to be this way?) :blobconfused:

It’s sad that they don’t seem to have any female friends.

My biggest gripe with Chinese novels is how ‘rape’ is handled. It’s always used to punish a woman; humiliate and ruin her reputation—nevermind the fact that a rape victim is a victim.

It’s a common trope in both straight & Yaoi romance novels— some bitch arranges for another character to be gang-raped. And then everybody shames the rape victim.

Hoo boy, if anyone wrote this shit in America, they’ll get SO much hate-mail for it.

I grew up on Harlequinn and Silhouette romance novels as a dude. I love romantic comedies
Made of Honor was one of my favorite movies of all time that I was actually old enough to watch it the year it came out.
but I have never read any female protagonist Chinese romance novel on here. There is always a rape tag and this line in reviews:

Female lead is strong and confident but when she meets the male lead she becomes useless

I have become notoriously picky as I got older, this is my kind of female lead

Ain't she just previous precious with the big ass sword :aww:

I discovered something, many of these stories are written for the female audience, so it doesnt matter if the female lead is a carbon cutout as long as the male lead is super rich super handsome super cook super everything.

Its one of the reasons I prefer Japanese dramas with their average loser male leads, because just like female audiences who enjoy K dramas with klutz pathetic female leads that the average drama watcher feels superior to and than fantasize getting such a great guy if the pathetic female lead can get him
I also enjoy watching a dude with no redeeming features getting the hot model
Bonus point if she is taller than he is, since I am tall

It's not only in novels, tho. I know a lot of real life story of a man cheating, and the woman would rage on the other woman instead of the man who cheats. In my country, we even have a term for a woman who steals other woman husband, nothing whatsoever for the cheating husband. :blobawkward:
Different culture. China (and a lot of Asian countries) is still very "shy" about sex, and women are still discouraged to have sex before marriage. There's even surgery to "restore" your virginity, since, well, apparently women's worth are judged by their intact hymens.

Victim blaming is also still very common, if you got raped, you must do something wrong; ex, going out at night or wearing sexy dress, etc. :notlikeblob:
So, yeah, it shows a lot in Chinese novels.

Sadly, women have to be the ones to make the change.
It will be a long fight.
On another note, I had a lot of typos in my posts today lol

Honestly, I'm not really complaining, just curious. And, yes, it's disturbing, which is why I stuck to the idea of filter.

It's kinda annoying, it used to be tolerable but the yaoi novels now is just gay porn due to the bunch of explicit content and somehow suspiciously specified scenarios.
