That doesn't give me a hell of a lot to work with, but generally whatever a series started as is better than the adaptation. If it was a LN first and an anime second, the LN is better.

To throw out a couple of recommendations though, Hunter X Hunter and Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood.
If you like smart and incredibly cunning protagonists, try One Outs, Code Geass and Akagi.
If you like anime that has a proper and definite ending without being open ended ready for a season 2 that never happened or whatever, you can try Steins;Gate, Infinite Ryvius, Last Exile and Scrapped Princess.

    Code Geass
Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai
    Youjo Senki
    Made in Abyss
    ReLIFE
    The Anthem of the Heart
    Puella Magi Madoka Magica

Edit: So one more because... well read on. Somehow or another my whole family has watched this show and enjoyed it... My Roommate is a Cat... yep by whole family I mean my mother and father and sister and brother... BTW it is the only anime that my mom and dad has ever watched... so take that how you will.

I'd recommend looking for anime that are original stories and not adaptations. You're more likely to get decent ending that way

    Hmm....

I'll recommend to you some of the big guns but they might not be to your taste.

    Code Geass
    Puella Magica
Legend of the Galactic Heroes (old, not the remake, I've not watched the remake yet)
    12 Kingdoms (strong recommendation)
Suka Suka (get the tissues ready)
    Psychopass
    Bunny and Tiger
    Inuyasha
    Shikibani Hime

Lesser anime that got let down in one way or another IMO:
Mai-Hime (great story, goofed up ending)
Full Metal Panic (it's a series so has its ups and downs)

There are a few others which I need to remember the names but I think this is sufficient to get you started and see if your taste matches mine.
