Welcome back home, soul traveller, to fair Amaranth, the land of Eternity. Held together by the impartial and violent rule of the Land Emperor, we have lived and died in peace for a millenium, whilst you've been away. Now prepare to be born in a new body. You may choose to be anyone, with one sole limitation. We are born to serve. We are born to dream of the sky. Only the sky is ever free, but who are we to indulge such fantasies? Nevertheless you might get lucky.

Above the endless sea of clouds exists a land of floating rocks. Many races made their homes there. It is chaos, it is free. You can be anyone, so long as you succeed in this place. Maybe one day you'll be able to join this place. Pray that you survive and get lucky. They say the slaves are freed under one simple condition. Prepare to pay the price.

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Welcome nuffians, to a new story-based roleplaying game! It will be a beginner friendly GM guided one, with a mix of a main story line and side-stories you can use to enahnce your character's options in the form of a writing prompt-based format, similar to everybody's favourite Adventurer's Guild.
    • You will be limited to a single character at first. All characters start as some kind of surface dweller. The initial setting is explained further below.
    • More characters can be created once you can run a crew for an airship.
    • Airships can be constructed with a combination of rewards from both story-mode, completing prompts, and trading among players.
    • The goal of the game is to form a fleet together with your fellow players and raid the surface, defeating the Eternal Land Emperor.
    • The most valued player will become Sky Emperor for this task. To become Sky Emperor, you need the support of a majority of players after a story event provided by the GM.

Everybody wants off the surface. The Eternal Land Emperor has turned this pristine green and blue land into a daily hell of rigid routines. The people still bear the increasing debts of their forefathers' sins. While magic preserves nature from the damages that industry may cause within the enclosed cities of magical technology, few people get to experience its beauty often. What is a curse, is also sometimes a blessing. For each sin there is an appropriate task that builds skill and develops it in the individual. Sadly once that task is allocated, it cannot be changed for the duration of one's life. Many individuals bear multiple sins, suffering all the more. For these sinners life is an endless toil at a field, a mine, a manufacturing center. Even those with magic aptitude are merely bateries and servants of the magical machines which power the Empire for its next great push, whatever that may be. People are specialists, they know nothing more than their jobs, and time for rumours is sparse. They could hold no protest against their predicaments, either.

For these overworked people, for your incarnation here, there are but a few select manners of entertainment. These are important, as beyond vocation, only these would train your skills:

Much cherished is the theatre, magically streamed from the House of Vanity. This is a seemingly informative peep show, containing the most beautiful and smart people of the Empire monologuing or conversing with their peers on a variety of subjects related to the bigger picture of each line of work. Ultimately most people only watch those for the humour and beauty programmes. The products on these shows go viral and regulate the fads among the working population. While everybody lacks the time to indulge in culture among themselves, this substitutes popular culture among the masses, causing sinners to incur more debt through the imitation of their favourite idols. Theatre is perhaps the most normal way to indulge in sin.

Another form of entertainment is sports. Sports in the Empire are all violent, but ritualistic and rule-bound. Rarely do people die from sport, yet there will always be blood. It is so, because the blood of sinners is purified through the act of venerating the Emperor and his victories. Sports in the Empire also prepare one for both individual and group combat.

Most sportspeople choose to participate in The Rite of Kin, a team competition, which tests the ability of people working together to break through an opponent formation and deliver a wisp through the opponent's goal (A small stone circle). Teams are always a power of three, up to a maximum of 36 players. The arena is rectangular with a trench in the centre and pillars holding the goals on each side. It starts with a veneration ritual, a taunt off dance between teams, and purifying the grounds with flowers and salt. Members of each team are allowed only wooden weapons no longer than their height, except for a the team's elite(s), who is afforded the use of magic, through a magic tool. The benefits of being an Elite Kinsman are related to this tool, which serves as training wheels for mana manipulation and body reinforcement.

The Rite of Duels is a very aptly named individual sport, holding the sole rule of victory by first blood. The ring of this rite is sacred, allowing only the participats inside, and all others at five steps distance from its bounds. Participants purify the ring themselves in silence and harmony, stilling their heart for the violence to come. Duels are always fair, any weapons used must be the same for both opponents. A handicap might otherwise be provided upon the agreement of both participants. Magic in this sport is freely used, but most often focuses on the enhancement of the weapon. Outside a select few battle junkies, the most this sport accomplishes is a betting ring. It is less popular for this reason, but a good way to reduce your credit of sins. There are rumours of successful sportspeople being cleared of all debts. These, I assure you, are completely unfounded, but you have a pretty face, this could be your ticket to Theatre and an easy life.

Finally, the third most popular sport, and the last of the consequential ones, is The Gauntlet. It is a monthly test of aptitude with a variety of themes, requiring exceptional physical and magical abilities, in order to place first. Aside from such people, many simply attempt it, because passing the elimination round provides free premium meals until the next Gauntlet run. It is also the least sparing one, competition-wise, as winners take all, and live in opulence for a short while, while losers who don't quit after elimination would bet their reward as part of the total prize. Successful Gauntlet Runners often illegally trade away benefits to their friends for whatever they desire. While not encouraged, this is never punished with more than acquiring more sin, thus individuals rarely quit their lifestyle, competing to near death to preserve their privilege instead.

As such any successful sportsperson is ensured to be competent as either a fighter, leader, or supporter of their peers, based on what kind of sport they lean to.

Finally, the least popular form of entertainment is neither official, nor a rite. It is simply migration. There's a system in place which allows those who work their hardest to pick their workplace for the taks they were born with. Within certain limits. Newcomers are always welcome, as they have things, quirks, and fashion that are often exotic to those pinned to one place. Some people get addicted to travel, some get addicted to travellers. It all incurs further sin, and travellers are often very sinful people.

You yourself would come from a background such as this. Hopefully you lived a life fitting to your aptitude.

    Characters

To participate in the game, you need to create a character. To make it easy, you just have to fill out a form, provided below.
    Name:
Appearance: Either written and/or an image inside a spoiler.
    Profession: Pick one:
    • Farmer: While very commonplace, very few farmers really make it to the sky. Their lifestyle is the most monotonous and heavily guarded by the Empire's drones. Should a farmer somehow make it off the surface, they would be highly valued for their aptitude of manipulating plantlife through magic.
    • Technician: Tinkerers who usually know how to produce and maintain a specific set of devices. While weaponsmiths are the most sought after for raid parties, any piece of magitech is important, when you have no industry to back you up. Technicians start with three items they could create. These are always either parts for something greater, or minor items of small utility. Even the best surface technician cannot create a broadcast device on his own, until he meets peers in the clouds. As such the Technician Guild membership is mandatory for all who wish to succeed as such.
    • Entertainer: These are people whose vocation is often in another field, but were successful enough to make it big in either sports or Theatre. They are considered experts in some field, but their practical skills are often lacking, due to mostly indulging in theory. This is less so with succesful sportspeople, who are cream of the crop, when it comes to their chosen sport. Sadly such dedication limits them to only one sports option.
Affinity: Based on your entertainment affinity, you can obtain a skillset related to something grander than your work. You may specify three options in any of the below categories.
    • Picking an overindulgence in a type of Theatre you specify yourself, will provide you with the ability to later practice what you have learned with more ease than a mere beginner. Otakus go here.
    • Picking one or more Sports will provide you with some benefits related to combat.
    • Travel often is considered a source of information itself, especially practical. It is the most beneficial to technicians, as it would allow them to produce twice the amount of items they would otherwise know (per slot picked), but is also of benefit to the combatants, as they learn multiple styles and enhance their art in more than one environment.
Background: Here you can specify what all of the above means for your character, some major events they might have gone through in their life. Ultimately all characters end up at an unnamed beach. You have to at least specify how you ended up at a beach.

Once you have a form completed post it in this thread for evaluation.

    Background:
As a child Ali was schooled to be an entertainer, to be the cutest child on fashion shows.

As she grew up, she embraced her family line of work as she learneda skin tones, makeup, and some basic biology to make herself more presentable.
Though when she turned 18 the family matriarch deemed her a worthy heiress and had her be the beach head into another land that contained no strong entertainers in fashion.

Little did Ali know that the phrase Beach head was quite literal and she ended up on a ship towards a beach.

    Name: Feenja
    Profession: Entertainer (Sportsman)
    Affinity:
    Sport: - Fencing
    Theatre: - Illusionist comedy
    Travel: - Travelling
Ever since she was a child, Feenja knew that she wasn't quite as smart as the other children. With nothing but a pretty face and muscles for her brain, her choice in life was clear to her: get popular in the Rite of Duels, become a real entertainer, and have an easy life. With this determination, she started training at a young age with a motivation only a child can have.

Her first match in the Rite of Duels went poorly. The second as well. So did the following ones. After losing quite a few times at one place, people stopped paying attention to her - so she traveled somewhere else, her motivation still unbroken and ready to continue fighting.

And every time she got beat, she learned. Then, finally, she started winning. Slowly but surely, she gained fame and followers, as she continued her life filled with constant traveling. Finally, a manager decided that she had enough skill and potential to become famous. From that point on, she embarked on what she herself calls a "bloody crusade", traveling around the world and challenging any sportsman she could get her hands on.

In these travels, Feenja gained experience fighting opponents of varying size, skill, personality, and race, and somehow has wielded most weapons at least once, though her favorite still remains the longsword.

With her increasing fame and success came the luxury of free time - which she mostly invested in watching illusionists trick people for comedic effect. Apparently, the tricks impress her while the jokes always make her laugh.

Another penchant of hers worth mentioning would be her willingness to take any bet - said penchant also is the reason for her latest troubles. While traveling to yet another city, another passenger jokingly made a bet with Feenja that she wouldn't be able to swim to the last few kilometers to the city armored. Feenja just laughed, grabbed her arms and armor, and jumped off the ship. Only on the way down to the water did she finally remember - that she can't swim.

After a short struggle, she got dragged away by the currents, finally ending up at a beach she never saw before.

Towering 195 cm tall and packed with compact muscles.
He has a rather gentle face outside of combat, but it transforms into the likeness of asura himself when in battle.
    TBD...
    Profession: Entertainer
Affinity: Sports - Rite of duels
Leo was always a rather large fellow, especially among his race members.
Unfortunately, it also means he was clumsier than most, especially when it came to being a technician like his parents.
Spending years on trying to improve his skills to no avail, he gradually lost hope on ever getting rid of his debts.
This of course came with a lot of teasing and bullying from both kids and adults around him.
One time, they went too far and stepped over a line. a line that was never meant to be crossed.
And they awakened the sleeping monster hiding deep within his psyche.
Learning the pleasure of fighting others and bathing himself in blood, Leo knew where his calling was.
He joined the sports section of the entertainment world.
At first, he tried out each of the three sports available but found himself most comfortable in the rite of dueling.
A stage where he can face his opponent in a fair battle of strength and wits, chained down by nothing and nobody.
In those short periods of time where he was locked in a duel with his opponent, he felt free, he was happy.
Outside of combat, he is known to have a gentle and nice personality, spiced with a bit of sarcasm and cynicism.

And how did one such duelist find himself on a ship heading for a certain beach?
Well, as a result of no new fighters joining the dueling rites this year, the amusement of watching the same fighters duke it out over and over started to wane, and the earning from the betting pool started to heavily decline.
Thus, the Arena-master decided to perform a fighters exchange with another Arena-master and Leo was chosen to be sent away with a lottery.
But, as fate had other plans, Leo mistook the ship taking him to the other Arena with a certain ship, heading to a certain beach.

Amaryllis was an unanticipated child---the couple had two fine sons; one smart, and one strong, and they weren't planning for more. So it came as a surprise when the second came in the form of twins. Perhaps as a sort of balance to her excellent old brothers, the young girl was born sickly and frail with little sense of feeling in her arms, and thus never quite gained any recognition from her parents. Thankfully, her siblings didn't mind, taking care of her needs and indulging in her simple wants. Because the harvests were ample, she managed to live a content childhood.

Until the year when harvests started dipping. Crop yield fell bit by bit over the months, and it didn't seem to be improving regardless of what happened. When another new year passed again with no good news in sight, the father took the sons out to the fields just before noon, while the mother brought Amaryllis a little ways into the forest.

"Just wait here, be a good girl."

Saying thus she left, leaving the girl by herself in the beast-filled forest. Hours trickled past as the young girl waited uneasily, that in turn giving way to fear as the sun started dipping below the horizon. Then the sounds started. Screeches in the distance, chirping in the foliage---the forest's inhabitants woke up after dusk. She waited at the same spot nevertheless, holding on to the hope that someone would come for her---and then the breathing noise behind indicated the presence of another.

It was a wolf. Female, but not with the grey coats she was used to seeing in the winter. This one had a clean, white coat that seemed to glow in the darkness, accentuated with blue markings. Intelligence, not savagery, showed in those eyes.

The next thing she knew, she was standing at the edge of the island, the wolf nudging her towards a makeshift raft of vine and wood. It nodded towards the girl, then nodded towards the sea. She hesitated, but something compelled her to board nonetheless. Soon as she did, the boat drifted away from shore, out into the distance.

As the girl cast a last look towards the shore, where the wolf was still sitting there, staring at her...

She could have sworn the lupine smiled in a very human-like manner.

    Olejal was a farmer.

While that would be enough to label him as a mundane man, his peers always found him quite queer regardless.

At first glance, he seemed to be one of the rare few that were entirely devoted to their work and seemed to stay out of any entertainment.

Neither sport nor theatre ever seemed to pique his interest, and the more sinful may even wonder how his mind holds up with nothing of interest in his life.

Yet, he was not without some eccentricities.

Despite his hard work, the edges of his smile were always curled up- not quite a smile, but close. And despite the dullness of his life the man always had a strange glint in his eye that no one could ever put a finger on.

Every few years, he would also elect to change his place of work; while that would always raise eyebrows, on account of his exemplary performance, he managed to get himself transferred to a variety of places.

So, what drove Olejal to live? The fulfilment of seeing another crop spring forth? The simple pleasure of seeing a different sky?

What sins did he harbour in mind?

It may be amusing to then know, that the simple farmer had committed one of the greatest sins of them all- through writ, written at the rate of a sentence a day.

Not simple notes to himself on the perfecting of potatoes plants or anything, but a wide variety of...dedacant texts that ranged from anywhere in the spectrum of poems to prose.

While outwardly he seemed dedicated to his work, internally he dreamed and imagined everything and anything, more than even those indulgent in theatre may dream of, in hopes of crafting the perfect sentence for the day.

The only reason he thus travelled was to simply try and attain some inspiration.
It seems strangely counterproductive- abstaining from the information theatre gave just to ensure a good record, but Olejal knew in his heart that it was better to experience and learn some things for himself.

Thus, relying on nothing but experiences and creativity of the deprived mind, he slowly scribbled out words and sentences in small journals, hoping that no one would ever notice his love of unusual texts.

Thankfully he wouldn't have to worry about those any longer- after all, they all went down with the sinking ship.

    Name: Emmanuel Wynne
    Appearance:
Wynne seems to be between his learly and late thirties. Usually in a sort of suit, he carried a backpack who was a bit a smaller than one meter, always filled with objects he considered to be necessary.
Slightly tanned, he had short black hair, barely reaching his neck but a thick and messy beard. At the very least, nothing hid his green eyes.
Wynne is a Technician with a rather common past, or so he described himself when courting ladies or gentlemen.

Someone might have said that he was a heartless cunt, a disgusting plunderers or such. Yet it is highly unlikely as these probably forgot about him at this point. Nonetheless, one thing was certain, everything had started in his childhood at The Gauntlet where his life began in those crude lanes.

Diving into this activity should have been detrimental, and it was. It left on him a permanent scar and hatred towards the notion of competition itself. As one of the unlucky few who almost died, he must have stopped and changed sport. Yet, he did not, he only wished to succeed once. Failing times and times again was fine, all he had to do was to win once. All for the sake of satisfying his poorly overinflated ego.
Even so, when succes immisced into his life, the debts bore by his forefathers’ did not seem to diminish anytime. Years later, he almost succeeded, although no matter what he attempted, his physical abilites were just relatively too weak to reach the top. He had arrived at the finals, but could not do more than that, in the end, his mind had yielded, intoxicated by those repulsive scents, be it blood or anything else, it became set on quitting.

To seek a more… tolerable activity. That is when he tried to to get information from the Theatre, unsuccessfully.

How should he find anything else? Faraway from those “sports”, something he heard about. Travelling was often something that was frowned upon. However, people such as Technicians were encouraged to do so.

Later on, thinking that his ability was not enough to pick up useful information, he decided to reunite the basics he already knew. It seemed that he needed exceptional magical abilities to become a Technician.
Afterwards, many roads began to appear, those lines became apparent. Continuing to fight to slowly diminish his debts, or, find in a way or another to join the Technician Guild as an apprentice or anything, he did not know where to begin. By way of compensation, his debts and sins would continue to pile up, it is likely that he will never be able to get rid of them if he does so.

Transmitting heavy debts was considered as an heresy around him or so he thought. Disregarding everything, his spirit was set on-- doing what he wished for. What he needed to, first, was finding a way to travel without many harms. Safer it is, longer it is, more dangerous it is, shorter it is. Unwilling to miss such an opportunity, he chose to have the longest trip within the realm of reason.
He never regretted that choice, how much has he learnt during those travels was worth adding sins onto his plats. As unfortunate as it is, this man played with the emotions of the people he met to profit from them, way more than necessary.
Although, the true question is whether he succeed or not, as expected, people were too prudent and he was rarely successful.

Reaching his destination, he became an apprentice, learnt the theories behind machines he has seen during his travels and some he may never get a sight of again. His magical abilities never have been applied as much as it did. If you specialized in magical abilities, were undefeatable at The Gauntlet, would it be enough to become a Technician? Certainly, it was not the case.
It asked for extensive magical abilities, but it needed specific sides of these, such as precision and complexity. Would you need some destructive power as a Technician as you do in the Gauntlet? No. It was different. Not only that, people were different. The mood as well. It is unlikely that his magical abilities will reach the adequate levels before working, however, that would be good enough for him to try paying off his debts to the Emperor.
Years passed-by, many trips followed to learn more, especially about airships, burdens and debts continued to be amassed on his shoulders during these two decades of chaos. In spite of this, it was the dawn of a new era. It was the day where he could finally begin to work hard to lighten the weight on his back.

For his first job, he needed to take a ship. While he was not feeling well, he needed to be ready and to do finally do it. What a mishap! An accident happened before he could expect it and thus, he fell abroad the boat and--
He woke up on a certain beach.

Backstory kinda OP. You haven't picked three affinities, just one. Think harder on how your affinities would fit the backstory.

Background: Stefan came from a long lineage of technicians and tinkerers, his mother and grandmother taught him calligraphy, for they were fervent artists, while his father and grandfather taught him the way of technicians and tinkering. When he entered his second decade of life, his family decided to let Stefan have the choice on whether to continue his apprenticeship under his family or venture out on his own. This lead to him venturing across the Land Empire, from the most obscure lands to the grandest cities, he had seen many sights in his ventures, he saw the previously unknown, and the misunderstood, he saw things that were yet to be claimed by the Empire in its entirety. One of the most interesting pieces of his ventures was when he stepped into a land, far southern to the Capital. There he discovered a unique people, a people whom desired to stay as recluses, yet were as competitive as the Myeps of the Eastern side of the Capital. These were such peoples that had unique features, they had no ears, yet had snouts resembling that of the elephants paraded around occasionally. Their eyes were like the cat peoples and their various tribes, however they had not the senses of the cats, but instead more similar to humans. Beyond that, though they were recluses they participated in sports, well a single sport which they referred to as Neojal. Unlike conventional sports such as dueling, and the sword arts that were about defeating the opponent, Neojal was in a sense, about dancing around the opponent and allowing them to defeat themselves. Neojal involved the usage of various weaponry and a ball. There were 15 people involved on each side, 5 of those being attackers, 5 defense, 4 assists, and a king. The kings held the ball, and a sword, while the defense had shields, the attackers could use anything they could get their hands on, and assisters held short spears or staffs. Stefan learned this sport in great interest, however he left before becoming very experienced. He had still practiced whenever he had a chance, and eventually found himself on the beach.

Choose two more affinities, and put Caligraphy under Theatre. You should be following trends in it, after all.

Backstory doesn't check out. There are no thugs in the setting, since it's a perfectly well controlled dystopia under the rule of the Land Emperor. Fix this, add yourself to the Inrepid's med crew, and you're good to go.
