It's a seemingly negative emotion, resulting from receiving a fairly expensive gift from someone that they thought would be good for you, but it's something you have no interest in and will probably never use. I can't say anything since it would probably come off as selfish, and I doubt I can return it to a store or something like that. I can't figure out how to describe this feeling...

A mixture of disappointment, sadness, and kinda a sense of 'betrayal' because now you feel like they don't know your preferences (or you as a person) enough to know you wouldn't like that gift.

Feelings aside. Are there no gift exchange services where you live?

    Ungratefulness.

Just accept the gift, thank 'em, be happy they got it for you. And, y'know. Proceed to never use it, as planned.

Treat it as if they gave you something highly personal, like a macaroni picture they made themselves. Completely useless to you, in other words, but it's the thought that counts.

So, what was the gift that you thought was useless and expensive?

Usually a website where people go after holidays to post gifts they don't need/want in hopes of finding somebody to exchange with.

You know, like an auction in novels, where seller specifies they'll exchange for other items only.

Or you can just try to sell it for money in a different marketplace (even on facebook).

I kind of get where they’re coming from. As an example it would be like giving a vegan an expensive purse made out of real animal leather. Your happy they gave you a gift, but disappointed they don’t know you as well as you thought they did. On the other hand if they knew you didn’t like that stuff and bought it anyway. It could be a form of insult.

I'd say it's more to do with the guilt of knowing how much it was, and how little I value it. It came with a receipt too.

Disappointment, because you have some expectation
Regret, because it's expensive and it's useless to you so you feel the money is wasted

You need to be honest with the person who give it to you

I almost always get people gift cards, or food. Much easier, and I know people will use it.

Its free stuff, just accept it. Maybe in the future someone close will need it, then you can give/lend it to them. Its better to have than not have. You might not have use for it now, but when you do in the future, you'll be glad that you have it.
Free stuff makes me happy even if i don't have particular need for that stuff. If its free, i'll take it. If its brand new and free, i will walk an extra mile for it.
