When I read translated stories, I’m always amused by the Chinese slang I’ve learned like...
    • Hugging a golden thigh = finding a powerful protector
    • Brewing soy sauce = sex
    • Cut sleeve = gay
    • Green hat = cuckhold
    • Chrysanthemum = back entrance
    • Shooting the Rocket = masterbation
There’s a lot more but I mostly remember the dirty stuff :sweating_profusely: And the footnotes explaining Chinese culture are always interesting as well.

Driving car(actually a bus) is the chinese version of shipping. In this case the bus driver is the person creating the shipping material, like an author or a fanartist. The 'passengers' are the shippers and 'swiping card' means to 'tap on' to the ship/getting onto the ship.

Celestial crab is actually river crab. It's a funny way to refer to censorship in China because the reason they use to censor something is for the sake of 'harmony' or 和谐 (he2 xie2). It's a homophone for river crab which is 河蟹 (he2 xie4) and a way they discuss censorship without being found out.

Baidu 10 mythical creatures. Each one holds immense power. Notable examles are French-Croatian Squid (法克鱿, Fǎ Kè Yóu) and Grass Mud Horse (草泥马, Cǎo Ní Mǎ). Though the second one is often misread as Cào Nǐ Mā (肏你妈), which is an F word involving the mother of the person you are talking to.

Oh I know which novel this came from. The author didn't mean to use "brewing sauce" as a euphemism for sex. She used "酱酱酿酿", which is a casual/cutesy way of saying "这样那样". If you say it fast, 酱 jiang sounds like 这样 zhe yang while 酿 niang sounds like 那样 na yang.

"这样那样" simply means "this and that" (e.g. he did this and that to her) so "brewing sauce" is a happy mistranslation that came about cause 酱 means sauce while 酿 means brew. Using "brewing sauce" for sex is... a little visual but oddly apt :blobpeek:

It's not just shipping. Driving = sex/ sexual stuff. That's where you get all the jokes in the comments section and the author's notes on how they tried to drive but failed (aka they tried to touch on more heated stuff but got caught by censorship) or how the author is driving a baby carriage (婴儿车), which means that the 'heated' stuff they wrote is suuuuper mild.
