I think they said that it was his private helicopter. He’s used it since his playing days. I don’t think he wanted to deal with LA traffic.
Helicopters in general have pretty high failure rates. An airplane can still work if 1 engine fails, for a helicopter, not so much. So you are pretty much screwed. LA traffic might suck, but the dead are in no hurry to anywhere. Its sad that it happened, but I'm sure he knew the risks when he prioritized convenience over safety.
It sounds like the pilot may have got lost in the fog. He flew around a zoo 6 times to figure out what to do. He also called in 15 minutes before the crash.

I rather be late than dead. also he is retired whats his hurry? the heli was his and he ignored weather conditions because it was stated that the fog was so bad that almost all flights for helicopters where to be grounded. he was clearing courting death and the grim reaper accepted the challenge.
kobe doesn't like heavy traffic so he goes from place to place on a plane or a chopper. but like you if i'm worth millions as well I wouldn't go near a chopper cuz that damn thing has no aerodynamics at all when it breaks you just go down like bam.
I honestly don't know what to think of Bryant, but any criticism about him should not involve his now-widowed wife or his kids regarding situations they were not in outside of being associated with him.
Given what happened to the Leicester City Football club owner, you would think people would be wary of choppers This is another reason why regulations can be good If they had to get permission from air traffic controllers or some other agency before flying this wont have happened but what do I know? It’s also for his health, read somewhere that he can’t sit in a car for more than two hours due to pain from past injuries and conditions. So a helicopter got him to his home games fresh and ready to play, he’s flown his own too.
His rape allegations always seemed fishy to me. His accuser had the DNA of another man on her. They said she had sex with another man shortly after doing it with Kobe. I think they said it was within 15 hours or something. The lady and her lawyer denied it and said the court was out to get her. She also said she gave Kobe a tour of the hotel and went to his room just for kissing. She said she didn’t want to go further but Kobe choked her and forced himself on her. Her friends said she was bragging about it at a party right after it happened.
