honestly? I don't see anything I do to affect something like this. I can't change it. And even if I can, why should I? People changes, the past remains static and immutable. What you've done is spreading awareness, but I think you haven't reached the right person. Instead of doing this, get a follow-up like using petitions, etc. to the right community. As for me, I am not invested in MHA or history revision.

Isn't the main point of using such a name to show how despicable a villain is? You're not supposed to like the name, you're not supposed to like the character. You're supposed to see that character in a negative light, name included. The name itself carries a negative connotation, and really, the only reason why I could ever imagine someone being upset over this would be if the character were whitewashed to be a hero or so, but that's not the case. They're a villain, they do bad things, have evil names, kick random puppies on the street and all other unsavory things.
And since that's the case, shouldn't people be fine with it? It shows acknowledgement that such a person and past event is bad/evil.

Yeah, was thinking of adding it but was too lazy. They had to make the skin colour purplish in later versions.

A woman who was researching Nanking massacre committed suicide.
It is easy to call people snowflakes but just because something doesnt impact you doesnt mean that it doesnt impact someone else.
Empathy is a lot harder than it looks...:blobexpressionless:

Anything can be hurtful if you look at it in a certain way. But fighting against what you see as injustice with an iron fist doesn't make you any better.

Like south park said "make bullying go kill itself". :blobpats:

Say... does it have meaning? Empathy from a random stranger on the internet? With people in front of us... sure. But I've gotten to the point where I feel even if I offer condolence to some stranger on the net, it won't affect them. I feel that neither my sincerity or any other feelings I have would be conveyed through medium like the internet.

    Thats not the point.

To be fair, her mental health affected her to make that decision more than the actual event itself. She would've chosen to 'research' some other dark part of humanity if Nanking hadn't been there.

hmm... if I may ask, what do you think? I am not intending that to be a response to your response to what you quoted. I am posing the question to you. Are you saying a random "good luck!", "you can do it!" from a stranger can affect people the same way people in already negative mindset made those messages personal to them?
hee? I lost context here. Who are you talking about? The girl who committed suicide? Yeah. I agree with @Wujigege here. In this case empathy is hard. I can't put name and face to this person.

My point is, Wuji was trying to point out how serious we should take things by pointing out the effects it had on someone.
Where the important point is not the event, but how people react and their emotional state.

Empathy is important and we should definitely be more understanding towards each other, but this doesn't happen forcefully by going out of our way by pushing others to do so by banning them from talking about certain things or having certain opinions. Taking away their freedom of speech or sense of freedom.

I've worked with people with mental illness, self harm and suicidal tendencies yet i can still joke about things that are serious topics.
If someone gets triggered by everything that's their state of mind, not something others are 'doing to them'.

i.e. i've seen people talking about how all racists should die. First, it's called 'taking offense' for a reason , it's your choice how you react.
Secondly , these people were all once children that were influenced by their surroundings and 'brainwashed' to think a certain way.
My grandmother was the only survivor of my family from Auschwitz, feel free to hate jews for all i care though, doesn't affect me because i choose not to let it.

Empathy is important but we should focus more on the people that are having issues, not the ones they have issues with. :blobpopcorn:

Dude, I live in a place for my entire life with this thing called "weaponised empathy", where everyone throws the victim card and starts to have the godamn delusion that everyone is treating them unfairly and these scrubs are just as bad as those who bullied them in the first place. Everyone here has the mentality of harming others even if getting harmed along the way so long as the people they hurt are in greater pain and "I am never wrong" mentality. For the record, this mentality exists in all those who are bullied/ proclaimed to be bullied and everytime someone tries to reason with them they get very violent, not defensive about it. So much so that I am rather dead on the inside that I am very willing to watch the neighborhood gets purged in the most sadistic way possible when it is me next, knowing that I will laugh my head off at the pains at all these bastards are feeling.

When OP started this thread, I immediately flashed back to the previous time where I read about the people complaining how the Chinese are represented in Code Geass, then sometime Mahouka, then AoT's jap general naming thing and now this. I be honest, I am rather tired, not sick, just tired that every now and then there are flags raised over and over the same ass issues coated in a different light as an original problem. Yes we hate the Japanese Occupation because just like the Nazis, they are darker and worse than any hellspawn/ demons, so any topic that remotely relates becomes a touchy one, and there is always the general hypocrism with the US showing patriotism military films as they purge the Nazis, Japs and Vietcongs, and yet some states actively call out foul when Germany wants to showcase their patriot movie.

I get it, in all of humanity we are not backing down, even as of now I am writing this much just to get back at you, this is sick, I want to delete this, but yet I love how much words and time I can waste at you.:)

So yeah, empathy is not lost, just nowadays, everyone is so sensitive to everything it desensitized me.

People sure trip out over the weirdest things...

And I didn't see people going up in arms over FMA, when that was clearly inspired by Nazi Germany in more than one places.

I'm not from the region -not even closely- and it's my first time hearing about this bit of history, so it clealry doesn't concern me, and maybe it's why am I failing to see the issue here. Plus, usually I just treat the names of fictional characters as names. After all the info posted by the op, I can't help thinking that it was a nice touch from the author though:
The good doctor is the loyal follower and right-hand man of the story's original villan: All for One, who doesn't think much about human lives. I think it's also the doctor's goal to create the perfect human being, but take this bit of info with a grain of salt as it has been a long time since I've read more than just the new updates coming out.
He is also the creator of the "Noumus", artificial humans, possessing multiple Quirks, who had been introduced as being bio-egineered especially to deal with the Symbol of Justice, All Might. While they are super strong, if they are not one of the high-end ones, they are incapable of individual thought and are just basically puppets for the main villain group of the series. At first the Noumus were thought to be created in a testtube (or that was just my own naive thought) when they were revelead to be made from the genes of multiple people, with new info revealed about them, it seems that they were created by using at least one person (per each) as the base of the experiments.

For a character like that I believe the name is fitting, and as many said before me, I'd only have an issue with it, if he were reflected in a positive light - which he isn't btw, he is callous even towards his own people until they show they are worth his support. I saw the op many times saying that the victims of the historical event were made fun of, but I don't see how the events were made light of with a character like this. (The noumus horrified me the first time they were showed, and continue to do so ever since.)

Empathy for the victims is also something that made a few re-occurences in this topic... That's very nice, but if this became such a big issue, did anyone bother to ask the people related to the originial incident which are they more bothered by? The (obscure) reference of an author to a very dark piece of history or all the keyboard warriors rising up all over the internet as self-proclaimed aids of justice and tearing their wounds open again?

Finally, since the op was asking for a discussion about a controversity, I would have preferred if they introduced both sides of the coin a bit more fairly, instead of showing clear bias towards one side. Not that them feeling strongly about the issue is anything wrong, I just feel that their introduction without knowing the work in question is a bit misleading.

You are right, when the OP pointed out the name to be something related to Japanese Human Experimental Project on their POWs, I find it quite befitting that the doc to be named as such, seeing how inhumane he is to do human experiments and creating abominations.

Fun fact, one of Kacchan's childhood friends who also bullied Deku when young has pterodactyl wings, guess which nomu went on to try and abduct Deku at the end of Stain.

Extra fun fact, it was hinted that the childhood friend is the doctor's grandson, so either there are a team of doctors working on the nomu project and one of the doctor's grandson becomes a sacrifice, or this walking proxy just used his own kin as an experiment, which failed fabulously.

Pornography desensitizes us to sexual violence and deviant behaviors in a similar way. I get it.
My point is to not generalize everyone as snowflakes.
We are all biased. Even if a woman kills a man, I will still plead for leniency for her
I am biased towards women, even as a dude, it is how I was raised.
    You have your own biases
Dismissing people as snowflakes is unhealthy
    Yes, people weaponize empathy.
Human relationships are based on emotional blackmail: if you love me, buy me this or that
doesm't me we should not be kind... oh a typo but I wont change it
Anyway, kindness is free, nothing wrong in being kid
The world is a cesspool but that doesn't mean we should fall to their level.
Humans are hypocrites, people criticize Trump for booing Hilary at his rallies but you had Bernie's supporters who are members of Congress booing her.
Humans are fools. Compliments are free but we are stingy to give out compliments.
There was a video about an actress who is suicidal from hate comments and the video got hate comments against the same actress. I felt very distressed by the video

Sometimes, it is best to just surround yourself with positivity. Mourinho beating Pep turned my frown upside

Youre leaving so much out. She broke down from physical exhaustion then took a variety of meds, most of which were antidepressants which caused her imagination to run wild.

It's been a while since I read it but I am sure it wasn't physical issues but mental.
I know there are cases of people who discover that they were fathered by Japanese rapists in Nanking, and they didn't take it so well.
No too sure if she was one of those cases
