This and that happened whilst I was sitting with a group and it led to this question. What is sex? Well, there is Fucking, which is raw, and cold, and in most cases, emotionless. Then there is Making Love, which is more personal and usually full of emotions, and care. So what is sex?

Depends wether you are referring to sex as a noun or verb. The noun means gender, the verb means an act of intercourse, love or casual doesn't matter. Also "fucking" isn't actually a word in the strictest sense, more like a slang since "fuck" is an acronym for Fornicating Under Consent of King, more or less (may have been adopted as an actual word in recent decades). Now, fornicate is more or less similar to sex(v).
I'm going to assume that you are not looking for a dictionary definition. So we are going to disregard simple mechanics and reproduction as a goal. In my point of view, sex is physical intimacy between two (possibly more) people for the purpose of experiencing physical and emotional pleasure for themselves and their partner(s). The purpose can be somewhat selfish -- you are mainly engaging for you yourself feel pleasure (note that as long as you treat your partner with respect, this doesn't necessarily result in a bad experience for the partner). Or it can be that you are just as invested-- perhaps even more invested-- in your partner's pleasure as your own. Sex can be and often is an important aspect of partner(s) relationship with each other, helping the partners to feel close to one another. As long as you are respectful and always look for your partner's ongoing and enthusiastic consent, sex can be anything the people engaged define it as.
