Hmm the changes are mostly made to the translations but the changes shown in the video are too drastic and normally they don't and shouldn't happen but maybe it's just an USA thing like how they use imperial system of units instead of metric:cookie:

Ok glitterforce is explicitly a rescript done by the same people who wrote and voiced Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. So it's basically the one extreme.

I think it happens pretty often. Take example of Pokemon. All know that its main character is Ash Ketchum but only a small number will know his name in original sub version.

I didn't watch, but sometimes dubs do make some pretty drastic changes.

Like how in Sailor Moon the two girls that loved each other became cousins instead of lovers, for example.

Or how in the Digimon Movie there were 40 minutes worth of cuts while they compressed 3 movies into 1 and made the character from the 3rd movie create one of the antagonists of the 2nd movie... Even though both characters were completely unrelated in the original.

There are also some simpler stuff that makes no sense, like in Doraemon they changed Chopsticks for fork and knife.

There was many numerous changes in the Sailor Moon dub. From the names being completely changed, to Zoisite becoming a woman because of his relationship with another man. I didn’t watch the later dubbed seasons, but there was a lot of LGBT+ stuff in the last few seasons which were probably changed. In fact, I think they weren’t allowed to dub the last season originally at all, probably because of the Sailor Stars, who were able to transform from men into women.

Oooooooooooooooh, I didn't know those at all, I only knew the lovers -> cousins one because it's one most people talk about when complaining about weird censorship.

Ouch, those changes are all terrible... T.T

Yeah, I was a teen when Sailor Moon was first coming out in the US. My friends and I paid attention and gossiped about the changes they were making, when we had the ability to find the changes out.

Honestly, I still don't understand why USA dub always... localize? and rewriting everything. In my country, the dub left name/location/everything alone except translating. There's nothing like Pokemon's Brock/Takeshi eating rice ball and called it 'sandwich'. Sometimes 'mature' scene like Sailor Moon's Haruka & Michiru intimate action will be cut, but nowhere they will going so far to make them 'cousins'. When I knew Power Rangers is an adaptation of 4 or more different sentai works with more tense plot and development I was angry. The dub that leave it alone is one that introduce me to takoyaki and other new things. The only thing I knew from the Americanized adaptation is their, uh, high school life, and from the dub is, uh, their funny voice that does not sound like real human talking (compared to real action movie, at least).

well, three 80's mecha series immediately comes to mind when talking about dub/western airing version vs. original. all of which has quite significant changes. censorship, taming (yes, tame), plot, character name, even the episode sequence and total episode counts. in Saber Rider's case, even the main protagonist changed.
    • SDF Macross vs. Robotech
      changes (spoiler alert)
    • Sei Juushi Bismarck vs Saber Rider and the Star Sheriff
      changes (spoiler alert)
    • GoLion vs Voltron
      changes (spoiler aler)
i think transformers got changed a lot too, but not too sure how much.

    You should watch Ghost Stories.

Here's an example: (Note that the original Japanese version was a serious anime. And you can already tell from the contents of this clip that it's was definitely not in the Japanese dub cause that joke only works in America.)

Yes, it's the actual official dub!

And there's more where that came from.
Apparently it didn't sell well so when it got licenced for English the voice actors were just told to do whatever they wanted...and this is what they did, turned a horror into a comedy.

That does happen lots of times, for example, look at any of the super sentai and you will find its 'clone' in power rangers
Another example of anime can be an old school anime called 'Saber Rider and the Star Sheriffs' which is the english version of 'Sei Jūshi Bisumaruku' and there are lots of other examples where the 'dub' is an english 'remake'

My title went from “夜想のしらべ” aka “Nocturnal Melody” to “Melodious Nocturne” in the dub. Everyone else’s (Organization XIII from Kingdom Hearts) titles have similar changes, I think. :cookie: I don’t really mind too much, since “Melodious Nocturne” still sounds cool.

I don't mind dub but I'll always prefer subs. Dub wasn't widely available when I was first getting into foreign movies/tv/anime and what existed was terrible. Basically a lot of MTL (which made zero sense in English), bad audio quality, voice acting that made me feel like they were reading straight from a book and entire swathes of relevant details were sometimes completely left out. Dub now is far superior to what it was, but after 15+ years of watching subbed material I'm used to it and not inclined to change.

Some Eng. dub line changes are justified, depending on the context.
