Cloud servers or VPS instances aren't any better than just paying $5-10/month for a dedicated VPN service. In many cases, it is a worse idea.

Most VPN companies own their own server infrastructure and configure it properly to prevent logging and leaking. If you get a VPS, you're sharing your server with other VPS instances, so there's a chance of someone breaking the VM sandbox and attacking your VPS. Also, there are configuration concerns. If you don't know how to properly configure both the VPN endpoint and the VPN client, you can end up leaking information. Let's not forget about configuring logging to be off for every service. Then, there's the question of who has physical access to your VPS. There are also downsides like only having a single exit node. With most VPN services, you get dozens or hundreds of exit points.

In short, spinning up a VPN on a VPS is a fun weekend project, but if you need a VPN for something that could cost you your freedom or reputation, leave VPN configuration to the pros and buy VPN service from a reputable provider.

note: Tor is only safe if you took precaution. and practice good using habits.
VPNs are a lie, your better off without them. but they do provide some/little level of protection if you host the VPN on your now servers. Well, VPN marketing usually make you feel safe. if your using a facebook or google account with an VPN, YOU ARE NOT PROTECTED so please practice browsing habits. and please use ads blocks on google tag manager and analytics.

VPN services are just milking your data. and you have a smaller data.
VPS are generally better, as it's mostly just some server likes to do backups. Personally I had use blue host for VPN, yeah dedicated wordpress servers. I have made a sites for a chinese dress shops, since the owner frequently travel to china. and shes a foreigner with foreign markets.

    OpenVPN is ridiculously easy.

Edit: if your new and don't know what to do, you can just spent as little as $5 on blackboxinternetservice and submit a ticket and wait for the administrator to guide you trough.

VPNs are not a lie. They protect you from leaking personally identifiable data like MAC and IP addresses to the public internet. This is essential for operational security whether you're hacking, downloading porn, or transmitting sensitive data that could get you killed. Lapses in VPN usage have been the downfall of more than a few hackers in the past few years.

Operational security goes further than just using a VPN and falls outside the scope of this thread. Needless to say, just using a VPN isn't enough to mask your identity, but it's the best first precaution you can take.

Free VPNs are cancer. Anyone who uses one is doing more harm than good. The whole point of paying for a VPN service is so they don't sell your data for marketing or inject ads. Reputable VPN services have regular third-party audits to prove that the VPN is properly configured and that they aren't logging or using your data to further enrich themselves.

OpenVPN is a dinosaur in need of a complete rewrite. It's easy to set up to work, but it's difficult to set it up to prevent leaking information. It's even more difficult to prevent it and all the services it relies upon to work without logging.

Or, you could just pay $5/month for a dedicated VPN service.

After seeing the controversy of many VPNs the were heavily sponsored in the past I personally had doubts about VPNs that rely on popularity which implies their priorities. So I stopped trusting VPNs featured in any sponsored ads.

I personally use ProtonVPN. I've been impressed by their ProtonMail service and they've been a trustworthy email service so far for such a long time that their trustworthiness is at the top of the VPN list for me.
