This may sound like a stupid question, but I genuinely would like an honest answer.

I was reading Faster Than A Kiss ( I genuinely love this manga....*lol*) Anyhow, there is this page where I read a tsukkomo that said: I feel like this could change directions and become yaoi. And the first thing that came to mind was, no way dude, they are half brothers...but then I wondered, am I right in this assumption?

In the Yaoi genre, it is OK to have a Yaoi relationship with a relative? I.e. brother, Father, Uncle, etc

*NOTE* Read the above text as if I was Carrie from Sex in the City writing her column. XD

Well, it depends on whom you ask and people’s personal tastes.
But yes, there are some novels that I read were it’s which feature this or a pseudo version of this (eg. Not related by blood, half related ect.)

I'm not an expert in yaoi.. but even in male-female relationship, there is a term called "incest".. so half siblings are totally shippable..

Basically this. Have you never stumbled upon a genre called "my step-sister..." in porn before?
If it's a hit in male -female relationship, it's not strange that there's some people that like it in homosexual relationship too.

Hmm...that's true, I just didn't think two related guys wanting to have a 'incestous" relationship was a norm? I mean, even in a hetero scenario, it's considered an abomination in most cultures in the world. It's an exception, am I right?

Depends from person to person. Not everyone has the same conceptions of what brother-sister relationships should be like.

I don't particularly care. But a lot of asians would be triggered. It depends a lot on the cultures you grew up with.

I dont think this is a yaoi question at all. Does the gender matter when it comes to incest/semi-incest relationship? It depends on your own values and tolerance, same sex or not.

Uhhhh, that's not a norm, incest is incest. It's just like Shio said, some people's tastes just run this way but it's not a norm.
Also. Just saying, but you really shouldn't treat what happens in yaoi novels and mangas as realistic take on homosexual relationships... (Just like the other genres, tbh)

    In real life, no.

In fiction, you can do whatever you want

The nature of public media as a whole doesn't require something to be a "norm" to happen, and at the same time norms change vastly between cultures and subcultures. For example incest is widely looked down upon but in history and some deviant circles it's more common or even praised. I think that even if its rare or disgusting (depending on how you look at it) its not impossible for it to happen in said manga.

At the same time fiction is often used as a outlet to do what is not possible or acceptable irl (look at revenge or power fantasies)

Tl;dr: just because it can't happen irl or is not popular irl does not remove all chance of it happening, at times the tabooness creates more appeal in some audiences.

there plenty of incest in hetero or homo relationships. I am a bit disgusted with this type of relationship in real life.. But fiction is fiction

Agreed. I wasn't thinking homosexual, just yaoi. Same as I wouldn't say polyamorous when I mean harem. I guess I'm testing how my idiosyncrasies/morality stand the test of time and culture. XD

The reason for incest in a heterosexual relationship has to do mostly with the biology of inbreeding deformities, that reason would not be there in a homosexual relationship see? So it got me to thinking....Sometimes, I find, we take things for a given when really I should ask the questions and learn a thing or two.

Ah, sorry, I added that just in case XD
Actually, while the incest taboo is logical and dictated by biological reasons (inbreeding), that's just for a heterosexual relationship that may produce offspring. (I'm not a fan of incest because eww but I wanted to point this out :blobpeek:)

exactly, so knowing that, does your answer to my question change? It's not a norm in yaoi thinking to say: Yep, those brothers must have yaoi feelings for eachother....right? Unless it's a subset of the genre. (I don't read yaoi). I am hoping not to annoy anyone, just curious.

No. There are fans of that, but subgenre is probably too big of a word.
It happens (maybe a bit more often than in hetero fiction) but it's not okay (it's still treated as incest, half-brothers is the most popular version, I think).

Edit: but as I said, I'm not a fan of this, so maybe my information isn't complete... :sweating_profusely:

I’d say it’s not “okay,” the way that incest is generally not considered “okay.” It is, however, a very popular sub genre. You can find a great many doujinshi and fanfiction pairing relatives, mostly brothers, together. There’s also plenty of manga that pairs brothers or father and son or uncle and nephew together, but they aren’t the majority, by any means.
