What I hate the most about system stories is that the system has more words than story progression. Like if you’re gonna make a story about system, make the chapters a bit long for more progress. Most I read barely moves on from a scene in atleast 5 chapters. The way MCs act is also such a turn off. They came from a modern world with rpg games etc. and they still get amazed by every little thing. Making them act like beta japanese MC is even more annoying especially when they keep stuttering.

Now when I think about it, I wonder if it isn't just projection done by authors who are tired of crappy user interfaces for their games or computers? I mean lets face it, anyone who have ever struggled with a Windows have had the thought that it's intelligent and messing with us on purpose.

To be completely fair, there have been good novels with weird systems.

For example, Experimental Log of the Crazy Lich is a novel that has a weird system but is a good read. In later chapters we understand why the system is so damn weird too. People who like fast paced novels or want constant plot progressions don't enjoy the comedic bits (which can be stupid at times).

As for the really badly written ones... I guess authors were trying to write lighthearted novels thats different from the mainstream but failed to do so. In the end, the web novel authors aren't professionals who have editors who can help them out. Doubt most of them make enough money to make writing a full time career.

80% of the time, all stories that have the all powerful system has a shallow plot.
They did it to save time and effort for the complicated settings. Giving the MC an instant power-up and plot friendly.
At the cost of a cheap and shallow plot. Or might be to cover up the author's inexperienced.

Probably because the author felt it was interesting and liked this premise~

People have different tastes than you do, that's all there is to it~

Likely they have a friend who laughs at it that annoying bs though. People's senses of humor are broad enough you can find others that actually like puns for example.

You pretty much answered your own question. Most of the time the systems they create act as filler in order for the author to get to certain points of the story. It also helps the author cover any plot holes that will generally arise because of the horrible system to begin with.

I figured it was to give the MC a constant companion who's in the "know" from the start so something mechanical by nature ends up as a character with a personality. Which isn't a problem by itself, but then the author has to deal with the social dynamic between the MC and the system. They can make it beneficial, apathetic, or antagonistic (or, hey, maybe some evolving mix).

I don't think it's impossible for someone to write a good novel with an antagonistic system but there has to be a reason behind it. There has to be MOTIVATION for them to act the way they do otherwise the story reads like fucking garbage.

TLDR: make system a character. it's 1D. everyone hates it.
