Do you guys have links to online glossaries of govt titles in China? I need one that offers English translations for those titles like 镇长, 市长 and 县处级干部 etc. And another question here. This is for those of you living in the USA or countries with cities and towns. I know you guys have mayors at the city level. Like Mayor of New York etc. But what do you call the head of a town in USA? I looked up 镇长 and 市长 and they are both translated as mayors according to the online dictionaries? But that can't be right? Do you call the "mayor" of a town the "town chief" or something like that?
Towns and cities are both headed by a mayor. The difference between a town and a city varies from state to state. But whatever the official designation is, they are headed by a mayor.
村长,乡长,镇长,县长,市长 From head of a village, county magistrate of a rural township, mayor/chief of a town(same level as rural township), county governor of a county, to mayor of a municipality/city 镇长 varies quite a lot, I believe? You could possibly be a mayor, a vice governor and so on.
Ehhhhh, that's correct they are both mayor. Its like brother can be both older and younger, and cousins can be both male and female. Is like both hen 雄鸡 and rooster 雌鸡 are 鸡 in Chinese. You don't really have to care about it.
镇 is same or a slightly bigger than 寸 县 is the same as 市 I think, 县 is no longer in use lol it's from older city called 县城。but now we call them 城市。now 县级市 are city that is outside of city. Edit: so basically 县长 now are 县级市长，which is still 市长。 But the elections are different? Not sure. Yes China have elections.
