I'd like some suggestions to translate 주지 스님 to english. It basically means a Head Monk in a Buddhist temple. the main guy in charge. It's a historical novel. so should i translate it as Monk, Head Monk, or Priest or are there any other suggestions?
Abbot? (The link is in reference to the English usage word for the eastern religious equivalent, not just to western religion) 'Abbot is an ecclesiastical title given to the male head of a monastery in various western religious traditions, including Christianity. The office may also be given as an honorary title to a clergyman who is not the head of a monastery. The female equivalent is abbess.' -definition, not my interpretation
I would call them the chief monk? Like how a ceo is chief executive officer? Head monk would also work
I think you should consider the genre of the novel 1st. If modern type or ancient, it's Monk or Head Monk If Sword and Magic or Game type, it's priest.
